亞伯蘭九十九歲時，耶和華向亞伯蘭顯現，對他說：「我是全能的神，你當行在我面前，作純全人。

你要依靠耶和華，要行善事，在地上安居，並要以信實為糧；

其中一位說：「明年這時候，我一定回到你這裡。看哪，你的妻子撒拉將會有一個兒子！」當時撒拉正在那人後面的帳篷入口聽著。亞伯拉罕和撒拉都已經老了，上了年紀，撒拉的月事也停止了。撒拉暗笑，心裡說：「我已經衰老，我的丈夫也老了，我還能有這等快樂嗎？」耶和華對亞伯拉罕說：「撒拉為什麼暗笑，說：『我已經老了，真的還能生育嗎？』在耶和華還有難成的事嗎？到了所定的時期，明年這時候，我必回到你這裡；那時撒拉就會有一個兒子。」撒拉因為害怕就否認說：「我沒有笑」；但那人說：「不，你確實笑了。」後來那些人從那裡起身，去俯瞰所多瑪。亞伯拉罕與他們同行，要為他們送行。耶和華說：「難道我會向亞伯拉罕隱瞞我要做的事嗎？亞伯拉罕必定成為又大又強的國，地上萬國都必因他而蒙福。因為我揀選了他，是要他吩咐他的子孫和後代家族謹守我耶和華的道路，施行公義和公正；好讓我耶和華對亞伯拉罕所說的都應驗在他身上。」然後耶和華說：「控告所多瑪和格摩拉的呼聲非常大，他們的罪惡極其深重；
