他瑪見示拉已經長大，公公還沒有將她給示拉為妻，就脫去做寡婦的衣服，用面帕蒙着臉，拿披服包圍身體，坐在亭拿路上、伊拿印的出入口。猶大看見她，以為她是妓女，因為她把臉蒙着。猶大就由路旁轉到她跟前，說：『來吧，讓我進去找你吧，』他原不知道那女人就是他的兒媳婦。他瑪說：『你要進來找我，要把甚麼給我呢？』猶大說：『我把羣羊中一隻山羊羔送來。』他瑪說：『在未送來以前，你要不要給個當頭？』猶大說：『要給你甚麼當頭？』他瑪說：『你的印章，印帶，和你手裏的杖。』猶大就給了她，便進去找她；她就從猶大而懷了孕。他瑪起來，走了；脫去面帕，仍舊穿上寡婦的衣服。猶大由他的朋友亞杜蘭人經手、把一隻山羊羔送去，要從那女人手裏拿回當頭，卻找不着她。就問那地方的人說：『伊拿印路旁的妓女在哪裏？』他們說：「在這裏並未曾有過妓女呀。」那人回去見猶大說：『我沒有找着她；並且那地方的人也說：「這裏並未曾有過妓女。」』猶大說：『你看，我把這山羊羔送去，你竟沒找着她；任憑她把當頭拿去做她自己吧，免得我們受賤視。』約過了三個月，有人告訴猶大說：『你的兒媳婦做了妓女了，並且因為行淫而懷了孕呢。』猶大說：『把她拉出來，給燒死。』他瑪被拉出來的時候，便打發人去見她公公說：『這些東西是哪一個人的，我就是從哪一個人懷的孕』；她說：『請認一認；這印章，這印帶，這手杖，都是誰的。』猶大承認說：『她理直、我輸她，因為我沒有將她給了我的兒子示拉』；從此猶大就不再和她同房了。到快生產的時候，竟發現她腹中是一對雙子呢。在生產中，一個孩子伸出一隻手來；助產婦拿朱紅線繫在他手上，說：『這是先出來的。』隨後這孩子正要把手收回去，他哥哥就出來了。那婦人說：『你這一下子突圍而出、多厲害啊！』就給孩子起名叫法勒斯。後來他弟弟、那手上有朱紅線的、也出來了；就給他起名叫謝拉。

向所多瑪、蛾摩拉、那一片平原全地眺望觀看，哎呀，那地方的煙氣還往上冒，就像燒窰的煙氣一般。

猶大對俄南說：『你要進去找你哥哥的妻子，向她盡你做弟弟的本分，為你哥哥樹立後裔。』俄南知道後裔將會不歸自己，所以每次進去找他哥哥的妻子時，總給蹧蹋在地上，免得把後裔給了他哥哥。

他不曉得該說甚麼；因為他們非常懼怕。
