“ You saw the affliction of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea.You performed awesome signs against Pharaoh, against his servants, and against all the people of his land, for you knew that the Egyptians had acted presumptuously against them. You made for yourself a name that is celebrated to this day.You split the sea before them, and they crossed through the sea on dry ground! But you threw their pursuers into the depths, like a stone into surging waters.

You, however, the LORD has selected and brought from Egypt, that iron- smelting furnace, to be his special people as you are today.

So Israel began his journey, taking with him all that he had. When he came to Beer Sheba he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.God spoke to Israel in a vision during the night and said,“ Jacob, Jacob!” He replied,“ Here I am!”He said,“ I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.I will go down with you to Egypt and I myself will certainly bring you back from there. Joseph will close your eyes.”Then Jacob started out from Beer Sheba, and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little children, and their wives in the wagons that Pharaoh had sent along to transport him.Jacob and all his descendants took their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and they went to Egypt.He brought with him to Egypt his sons and grandsons, his daughters and granddaughters– all his descendants.These are the names of the sons of Israel who went to Egypt– Jacob and his sons: Reuben, the firstborn of Jacob.The sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul( the son of a Canaanite woman).The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah( but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul.The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron.The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.These were the sons of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob in Paddan Aram, along with Dinah his daughter. His sons and daughters numbered thirty-three in all.The sons of Gad: Zephon, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli.The sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and Serah their sister. The sons of Beriah were Heber and Malkiel.These were the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter. She bore these to Jacob, sixteen in all.The sons of Rachel the wife of Jacob: Joseph and Benjamin.Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph in the land of Egypt. Asenath daughter of Potiphera, priest of On, bore them to him.The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.These were the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob, fourteen in all.The son of Dan: Hushim.The sons of Naphtali: Jahziel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.These were the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter. She bore these to Jacob, seven in all.All the direct descendants of Jacob who went to Egypt with him were sixty-six in number.( This number does not include the wives of Jacob’s sons.)Counting the two sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt, all the people of the household of Jacob who were in Egypt numbered seventy.Jacob sent Judah before him to Joseph to accompany him to Goshen. So they came to the land of Goshen.Joseph harnessed his chariot and went up to meet his father Israel in Goshen. So the LORD said to Moses,“ See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.You are to speak everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh that he must release the Israelites from his land.But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and although I will multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt,Pharaoh will not listen to you. I will reach into Egypt and bring out my regiments, my people the Israelites, from the land of Egypt with great acts of judgment.Then the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD, when I extend my hand over Egypt and bring the Israelites out from among them.And Moses and Aaron did so; they did just as the LORD commanded them.Now Moses was eighty years old and Aaron was eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,“ When Pharaoh says to you,‘ Do a miracle,’ and you say to Aaron,‘ Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,’ it will become a snake.”When Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh, they did so, just as the LORD had commanded them– Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants and it became a snake.Then Pharaoh also summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the magicians of Egypt by their secret arts did the same thing.Each man threw down his staff, and the staffs became snakes. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs.Yet Pharaoh’s heart became hard, and he did not listen to them, just as the LORD had predicted.The LORD said to Moses,“ Pharaoh’s heart is hard; he refuses to release the people.

“ I will grant this people favor with the Egyptians, so that when you depart you will not leave empty-handed.Every woman will ask her neighbor and the one who happens to be staying in her house for items of silver and gold and for clothing. You will put these articles on your sons and daughters– thus you will plunder Egypt!”

Also, take your flocks and your herds, just as you have requested, and leave. But bless me also.”The Egyptians were urging the people on, in order to send them out of the land quickly, for they were saying,“ We are all dead!”So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, with their kneading troughs bound up in their clothing on their shoulders.Now the Israelites had done as Moses told them– they had requested from the Egyptians silver and gold items and clothing.The LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, and they gave them whatever they wanted, and so they plundered Egypt.The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about 600,000 men on foot, plus their dependants.A mixed multitude also went up with them, and flocks and herds– a very large number of cattle.

and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I assigned Mount Seir, while Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.I sent Moses and Aaron, and I struck Egypt down when I intervened in their land. Then I brought you out.When I brought your fathers out of Egypt, you arrived at the sea. The Egyptians chased your fathers with chariots and horsemen to the Red Sea.Your fathers cried out for help to the LORD; he made the area between you and the Egyptians dark, and then drowned them in the sea. You witnessed with your very own eyes what I did in Egypt. You lived in the wilderness for a long time.

I have also heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.Therefore, tell the Israelites,‘ I am the LORD. I will bring you out from your enslavement to the Egyptians, I will rescue you from the hard labor they impose, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments.

When Jacob entered Egypt, your ancestors cried out to the LORD. The LORD sent Moses and Aaron, and they led your ancestors out of Egypt and settled them in this place.

Bear in mind today that I am not speaking to your children who have not personally experienced the judgments of the LORD your God, which revealed his greatness, strength, and power.They did not see the awesome deeds he performed in the midst of Egypt against Pharaoh king of Egypt and his whole land,or what he did to the army of Egypt, including their horses and chariots, when he made the waters of the Red Sea overwhelm them while they were pursuing you and he annihilated them.

you must not fear them. You must carefully recall what the LORD your God did to Pharaoh and all Egypt,the great judgments you saw, the signs and wonders, the strength and power by which he brought you out– thus the LORD your God will do to all the people you fear.

For the LORD our God took us and our fathers out of slavery in the land of Egypt and performed these awesome miracles before our very eyes. He continually protected us as we traveled and when we passed through nations.

They executed his miraculous signs among them, and his amazing deeds in the land of Ham.He made it dark; they did not disobey his orders.He turned their water into blood, and killed their fish.Their land was overrun by frogs, which even got into the rooms of their kings.He ordered flies to come; gnats invaded their whole territory.He sent hail along with the rain; there was lightning in their land.He destroyed their vines and fig trees, and broke the trees throughout their territory.He ordered locusts to come, innumerable grasshoppers.They ate all the vegetation in their land, and devoured the crops of their fields.He struck down all the firstborn in their land, the firstfruits of their reproductive power.He brought his people out enriched with silver and gold; none of his tribes stumbled.

For the LORD vindicates his people, and has compassion on his servants.

He performed awesome deeds and acts of judgment in your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants.

Against you– you above all– I have sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. So you are just when you confront me; you are right when you condemn me.

when he performed his awesome deeds in Egypt, and his acts of judgment in the region of Zoan.He turned their rivers into blood, and they could not drink from their streams.He sent swarms of biting insects against them, as well as frogs that overran their land.He gave their crops to the grasshopper, the fruit of their labor to the locust.He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore-fig trees with driving rain.He rained hail down on their cattle, and hurled lightning bolts down on their livestock.His raging anger lashed out against them, He sent fury, rage, and trouble as messengers who bring disaster.He sent his anger in full force; he did not spare them from death; he handed their lives over to destruction.He struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their reproductive power in the tents of Ham.
