蓋肉體所欲、逆聖神、聖神所欲、逆肉體、二者相敵、致爾不能為所欲為、

For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

The desires controlled by sin do not want what the Spirit delights in. And the Spirit does not want what the desires controlled by sin delight in. The two are at war with each other. That’s why you are not supposed to do whatever you want.

For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.

For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit, and the Spirit desires what is against the flesh; these are opposed to each other, so that you don’t do what you want.

For the desire of the flesh is against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, in order to keep you from doing whatever you want.

For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.

生於血肉者、屬於血肉、生於神者、乃屬於神。

爾如從欲、取死之道也。存神去欲、得生之道也。

永慕典章。如渴思飲。

蓋從欲者、體欲之情；而從神者、體神之情。體欲之情者死、而體神之情者生以安。無他、蓋順於欲者、則逆於天主；如此自不甘服天主之法、且亦不能。故凡體欲之情者、必不能取悅於天主也。

經云：『寓我心中之聖神、愛我情深、不容我別有所戀；』爾以此語為虛發乎。且天主之所以福惠吾人者、亦已厚矣。經云：『天主抑驕福謙、』此之謂也。

宜警惕祈禱、庶免墮誘；心志雖堅、形軀實荏。』

發憤守誡。自強不息。祈主使我。心冲體逸。

小子知趨避。福祿盡在茲。誰能悟其愆。惟主濯其疵。

錫我天樂。枯骨回春。莫視我罪。銷我邪淫。為我再造。純白之心。正氣內蘊。煥然一新。

蓋吾輩之過失、不一而足、如能慎言、以免口過、則庶幾矣。若而人者、亦可謂能自勒其口、而自主其身者矣。

謂之曰：『胡為睡耶？起而禱！庶免陷誘。』

耶穌顧謂伯鐸祿曰：『沙殫退去！汝為我梗。汝但體人情、不體天意。』

於此吾人更有何說？將謂法即罪乎？無是理也！法非罪、乃所以燭吾之罪耳。法若不曰「毋淫、」則吾將不知淫之為淫矣。雖然、罪乃乘虛而入、即因其誡命而攪亂吾心、於以引起諸般淫慾。故無法則罪亦不至如此活躍耳。

予非自謂已奪得錦標、或已臻無過之境；第予仍朝乾夕惕努力前進、以冀能把握基督、亦如予之夙為基督所把握也。兄弟乎、予自分尚無把握惟有一事可以告慰兄弟、即從前種種、悉已置諸腦後、脫然忘懷；此後種種、尚在孳孳不倦、繼續努力、聚精會神、看定目標、奮赴前程、必欲自附於基督耶穌、以臻上達庶幾無負天主之寵召。願凡信德成熟之兄弟、皆欣然以此為志也。設爾之懷抱與此略有出入、吾知天主亦必有以牖爾之衷。惟無論吾人之造詣如何、知行務求相契耳。

凡不附我者、逆我者也；不與我歛、則耗散矣。故吾語爾、

若吾人自謂無罪、是為自欺、而無真諦存乎吾心。吾人苟能自訟其罪、立志自新、則全信全義之天主、必寬赦吾罪、且為蕩滌眾穢矣。若曰吾向未犯罪、是不啻使天主成為誑者、尚得謂有真諦存乎其心乎。

願主指導。當行之路。

耶穌曰：『福哉若納子西門：蓋以此啟汝者、非屬血氣肉情；在天吾父、實牖爾衷。

夫誡命所以躋我於生也、結果反以致我於死者、何也？蓋罪乘隙而入、利用誡命、以陷我於惑、而成我之戮。是故法非不美、誡非不聖也；固善且美矣。豈善且美者、適足以促予之死耶？無是理也！致死之因、惟罪而已。正惟其能使善且美者、轉成致死之具、此罪之所以為罪也。在誡命之明鑒中、罪之醜態畢露矣。吾人固知法乃屬靈之器、然我乃血氣之倫、自鬻於罪、而作其奴。蓋我之所為、自身亦莫明其所以然也。我之所願、我未之行；我之所惡、我反行之。夫既知吾行之非、則承認法之是矣。然此實非吾之所為、乃寓於吾身之罪之所為也。吾知寓吾肉身之內者、實無片善可稱也。為善之願、未始無有；而為善之力、則未能有也。心欲行善、而卒未能行；心雖疾惡、而卒未之能去也。既云非所願而行之、則自非我之所為、乃寓吾身中之罪之所為也。於是吾於自身之內、另見一法。吾欲為善、而有惡潛伏其中、為之牽引。若依吾內心、吾固以天主之法為樂也。然吾又見一法、寓吾肢體之中、與吾心之法、恆相對敵、而囚吾於肢體之罪孽法中。嗚呼、我誠可哀之人也！孰能脫我於此致死之肉身乎？惟謝天主、已予我以生路矣、生路伊何、即耶穌基督吾人之主是已！若夫憑吾自身、則心中雖服膺天主之法、而肉身則猶為罪孽之奴耳。

伯鐸祿對曰：『主乎、吾即偕子入獄、同子致命、亦所不辭。』

根深柢固。信道彌堅。莫使謬種。長我心田。

典章炳煥。我心所慕。賜我生命。昭爾恩祜。

饑渴慕義乃真福、心期靡有不飫足。

眾執耶穌解送總司祭署、伯鐸祿遙尾其後。庭中燃火、眾人環坐、伯鐸祿與焉。一婢見其面火坐、注視之曰：『此人從耶穌。』伯鐸祿不承曰：『女子、吾不識彼人。』無何、又一人見之曰：『汝亦彼黨。』伯鐸祿曰：『君誤矣！吾非彼黨。』閱一時許、更有人堅言曰：『此人確為彼黨、亦加利利人也。』伯鐸祿曰：『吾實不知君之所云。』言未已而雞鳴矣。主回顧伯鐸祿、伯鐸祿方憶主所語今宵雞鳴前、行見爾三背予之言、

聖誡彰彰。寧敢荒逸。祈主導我。虔守大法。庶幾無愧。金科玉律。

我之所愛。惟在聖誡。祈主開恩。予以覆載。

然則律法豈與恩諾相牴牾乎？無是理也。蓋所賜之律法、苟能予人以生命、則吾人所恃以成義者、誠在律法之中矣。

但願血氣倫。翕然來歸順。

我如迷羊。歧途徬徨。祈主導引。歸於牧場。鑒我丹忱。未忘典章。

天下之人。誰無罪尤。主若深究。孰能無憂。

可師惟禮。怡養吾性。吾命瀕危。將轉溝壑。祈保吾身。依爾所諾。
