for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children—

and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.

Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes.

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out,“ Abba, Father.”

Now this is the genealogy of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maidservant, bore to Abraham.

Then I said,“ Ah, Lord God! They say of me,‘ Does he not speak parables?’”

by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant.

And He said,“ Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where have you come from, and where are you going?” She said,“ I am fleeing from the presence of my mistress Sarai.”

And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying,“ This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying,“ This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second.Because finding fault with them, He says:“ Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord.For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.None of them shall teach his neighbor, and none his brother, saying,‘ Know the Lord,’ for all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them.For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”In that He says,“ A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

Brethren, I speak in the manner of men: Though it is only a man’s covenant, yet if it is confirmed, no one annuls or adds to it.Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say,“ And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one,“ And to your Seed,” who is Christ.And this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it should make the promise of no effect.For if the inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise.What purpose then does the law serve? It was added because of transgressions, till the Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed through angels by the hand of a mediator.Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is one.Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law.

Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

And he said:“ The Lord came from Sinai, And dawned on them from Seir; He shone forth from Mount Paran, And He came with ten thousands of saints; From His right hand Came a fiery law for them.

So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

But the Holy Spirit also witnesses to us; for after He had said before,“ This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,”then He adds,“ Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.
