But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise,

婢出者、循人道、婦出者、因應許、

其由婢生者、循血氣而生、其由自主之婦生者、因應許而生、

然婢女之子、乃因肉情而生；而主婦之子、則憑恩諾而生。

His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise.

Abraham’s son by the slave woman was born in the usual way. But his son by the free woman was born because of God’s promise.

But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.

The son of the slave wife was born in a human attempt to bring about the fulfillment of God’s promise. But the son of the freeborn wife was born as God’s own fulfillment of his promise.

But the one by the slave was born as a result of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born through promise.

But the son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise.

Howbeit the son by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the son by the freewoman is born through promise.

But the one by the slave was born according to the impulse of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.

But he[ who was] of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman[ was] by promise.

But one, the son by the slave woman, was born by natural descent, while the other, the son by the free woman, was born through the promise.

However, the son by the servant was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise.

By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.

nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but,“ In Isaac your seed shall be called.”That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed.

And the Lord visited Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had spoken.For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.

And He said,“ I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.”( Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.)Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying,“ After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my Lord being old also?”And the Lord said to Abraham,“ Why did Sarah laugh, saying,‘ shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise.But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.

who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken,“ So shall your descendants be.”And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead( since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah’s womb.He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God,and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.

Then God said to Abraham,“ As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her.”Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart,“ Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?”And Abraham said to God,“ Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”Then God said:“ No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.

But what does it say?“ The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”( that is, the word of faith which we preach):
