But the son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise.

其由婢生者、循血氣而生、其由自主之婦生者、因應許而生、

然婢女之子、乃因肉情而生；而主婦之子、則憑恩諾而生。

His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise.

Abraham’s son by the slave woman was born in the usual way. But his son by the free woman was born because of God’s promise.

But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.

The son of the slave wife was born in a human attempt to bring about the fulfillment of God’s promise. But the son of the freeborn wife was born as God’s own fulfillment of his promise.

But the one by the slave was born as a result of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born through promise.

But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise,

Howbeit the son by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the son by the freewoman is born through promise.

But the one by the slave was born according to the impulse of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.

But he[ who was] of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman[ was] by promise.

But one, the son by the slave woman, was born by natural descent, while the other, the son by the free woman, was born through the promise.

However, the son by the servant was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise.

By faith even Sarah herself received ability to conceive, even beyond the proper time of life, since she considered Him faithful who had promised.

nor are they all children because they are Abraham’s descendants, but:“ through Isaac your descendants shall be named.”That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants.

Then the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had promised.So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken to him.

He said,“ I will certainly return to you at this time next year; and behold, your wife Sarah will have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door, which was behind him.Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; Sarah was past childbearing.So Sarah laughed to herself, saying,“ After I have become old, am I to have pleasure, my lord being old also?”But the Lord said to Abraham,“ Why did Sarah laugh, saying,‘ Shall I actually give birth to a child, when I am so old?’Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

And you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise.But as at that time the son who was born according to the flesh persecuted the one who was born according to the Spirit, so it is even now.

In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken,“ So shall your descendants be.”Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah’s womb;yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God,and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform.

Then God said to Abraham,“ As for your wife Sarai, you shall not call her by the name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name.I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart,“ Will a child be born to a man a hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth to a child?”And Abraham said to God,“ Oh that Ishmael might live before You!”But God said,“ No, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you shall name him Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.

But what does it say?“ The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”— that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,
