But not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message?So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ.

The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles by Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promised Spirit through faith.

And God, who knows the heart, bore witness to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he also did to us.

At the same time, God also testified by signs and wonders, various miracles, and distributions of gifts from the Holy Spirit according to his will.

and asked them,“ Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”“ No,” they told him,“ we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”“ Into what then were you baptized?” he asked them.“ Into John’s baptism,” they replied.Paul said,“ John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in tongues and to prophesy.

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came down on all those who heard the message.The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were amazed because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.For they heard them speaking in tongues and declaring the greatness of God. Then Peter responded,“ Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”

After they went down there, they prayed for them so that the Samaritans might receive the Holy Spirit because he had not yet come down on any of them.

Peter replied,“ Repent and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

So then, does God give you the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law? Or is it by believing what you heard—

“ As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came down on them, just as on us at the beginning.I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said,‘ John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’If, then, God gave them the same gift that he also gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, how could I possibly hinder God?”When they heard this they became silent. And they glorified God, saying,“ So then, God has given repentance resulting in life even to the Gentiles.”

For it is impossible to renew to repentance those who were once enlightened, who tasted the heavenly gift, who shared in the Holy Spirit,

In him you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed.The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession, to the praise of his glory.

For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.

A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good:to one is given a message of wisdom through the Spirit, to another, a message of knowledge by the same Spirit,to another, faith by the same Spirit, to another, gifts of healing by the one Spirit,to another, the performing of miracles, to another, prophecy, to another, distinguishing between spirits, to another, different kinds of tongues, to another, interpretation of tongues.One and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each person as he wills.For just as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body— so also is Christ.For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body— whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free— and we were all given one Spirit to drink.

It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven— angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.

For if a person comes and preaches another Jesus, whom we did not preach, or you receive a different spirit, which you had not received, or a different gospel, which you had not accepted, you put up with it splendidly!
