For ye have heard of my manner of life in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and made havoc of it:

爾聞我素從猶太人教、所為之事、即窘逐上帝會特甚、而殘賊之、

爾已聞我昔在猶太人教所行之事、即極力窘逐天主教會而殘害之、

吾舊日在猶太教中之生活、固爾等所夙聞也。當時吾於天主之教會、迫辱摧殘、無所不用其極；

For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.

You have heard how I lived earlier in my Jewish way of life. With all my strength I attacked the church of God. I tried to destroy it.

But Saul laid waste the church, entering into every house, and dragging men and women committed them to prison.

I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as ye all are this day:and I persecuted this Way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and journeyed to Damascus to bring them also that were there unto Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

But Saul, yet breathing threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,and asked of him letters to Damascus unto the synagogues, that if he found any that were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

I verily thought with myself that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.And this I also did in Jerusalem: and I both shut up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests, and when they were put to death I gave my vote against them.And punishing them oftentimes in all the synagogues, I strove to make them blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto foreign cities.

But Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard from many of this man, how much evil he did to thy saints at Jerusalem:and here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call upon thy name.

though I was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: howbeit I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief;

as touching zeal, persecuting the church; as touching the righteousness which is in the law, found blameless.

And Saul was consenting unto his death. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church which was in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judæa and Samaria, except the apostles.
