這事以後，波斯王亞達薛西年間，有個以斯拉，他是西萊雅的兒子，西萊雅是亞撒利雅的兒子，亞撒利雅是希勒家的兒子，

於是，在耶路撒冷神殿的工程就停止了，直停到波斯王大流士第二年。那時，先知哈該和易多的孫子撒迦利亞奉以色列神的名向猶大和耶路撒冷的猶大人說勸勉的話。於是撒拉鐵的兒子所羅巴伯和約薩達的兒子耶書亞都起來動手建造耶路撒冷神的殿，有神的先知在那裏幫助他們。

然而巴比倫王塞魯士元年，他降旨允准建造神的這殿。

若有王和民伸手更改這命令，拆毀這殿，願那使耶路撒冷的殿作為他名居所的神將他們滅絕。我－大流士降這旨意，當速速遵行。」於是，河西總督達乃和示他‧波斯乃，並他們的同黨，因大流士王所發的命令，就急速遵行。

波斯王塞魯士元年，耶和華為要應驗藉耶利米口所說的話，就激動波斯王塞魯士的心，使他下詔通告全國說：「波斯王塞魯士如此說：『耶和華天上的神已將天下萬國賜給我，又囑咐我在猶大的耶路撒冷為他建造殿宇。在你們中間凡作他子民的，可以上猶大的耶路撒冷，在耶路撒冷重建耶和華－以色列神的殿（只有他是神）。願神與這人同在。凡剩下的人，無論寄居何處，那地的人要用金銀、財物、牲畜幫助他，另外也要為耶路撒冷神的殿甘心獻上禮物。』」

「所羅巴伯的手立了這殿的根基，他的手也必完成這工，你就知道萬軍之耶和華差遣我到你們這裏來了。

你們要上山取木料，建造這殿，我就因此喜樂，且得榮耀。這是耶和華說的。

那時，撒拉鐵的兒子所羅巴伯和約撒答的兒子大祭司約書亞，並剩下的百姓，都聽從耶和華－他們神的話和先知哈該奉耶和華－他們神差來所說的話；百姓也在耶和華面前存敬畏的心。耶和華的使者哈該奉耶和華差遣對百姓說：「耶和華說：我與你們同在。」耶和華激動猶大省長撒拉鐵的兒子所羅巴伯和約撒答的兒子大祭司約書亞，並剩下之百姓的心，他們就來為萬軍之耶和華－他們神的殿做工。

但所羅巴伯、耶書亞，和其餘以色列的族長對他們說：「我們建造神的殿與你們無干，我們自己為耶和華－以色列的神協力建造，是照波斯王塞魯士所吩咐的。」

百姓到了耶路撒冷神殿的地方。第二年二月，撒拉鐵的兒子所羅巴伯，約薩達的兒子耶書亞和其餘的弟兄，就是祭司、利未人，並一切被擄歸回耶路撒冷的人，都興工建造；又派利未人，從二十歲以外的，督理建造耶和華殿的工作。

我又舉目觀看，見一人手拿準繩。我說：「你往哪裏去？」他對我說：「要去量耶路撒冷，看有多寬多長。」與我說話的天使去的時候，又有一位天使迎着他來，對他說：「你跑去告訴那少年人說，耶路撒冷必有人居住，好像無城牆的鄉村，因為人民和牲畜甚多。

「你要曉諭猶大省長撒拉鐵的兒子所羅巴伯和約撒答的兒子大祭司約書亞，並剩下的百姓，說：你們中間存留的，有誰見過這殿從前的榮耀呢？現在你們看着如何？豈不在眼中看如無有嗎？」耶和華說：「所羅巴伯啊，雖然如此，你當剛強！約撒答的兒子大祭司約書亞啊，你也當剛強！這地的百姓，你們都當剛強做工，因為我與你們同在。這是萬軍之耶和華說的。這是照着你們出埃及我與你們立約的話。那時，我的靈住在你們中間，你們不要懼怕。」萬軍之耶和華如此說：「過不多時，我必再一次震動天地、滄海，與旱地。我必震動萬國；萬國的珍寶必都運來，我就使這殿滿了榮耀。這是萬軍之耶和華說的。」萬軍之耶和華說：「銀子是我的，金子也是我的。這殿後來的榮耀必大過先前的榮耀；在這地方我必賜平安。這是萬軍之耶和華說的。」大流士王第二年九月二十四日，耶和華的話臨到先知哈該說：萬軍之耶和華如此說：「你要向祭司問律法，說：若有人用衣襟兜聖肉，這衣襟挨着餅，或湯，或酒，或油，或別的食物，便算為聖嗎？」祭司說：「不算為聖。」哈該又說：「若有人因摸死屍染了污穢，然後挨着這些物的哪一樣，這物算污穢嗎？」祭司說：「必算污穢。」於是哈該說：「耶和華說：這民這國，在我面前也是如此；他們手下的各樣工作都是如此；他們在壇上所獻的也是如此。」現在你們要追想，此日以前，耶和華的殿沒有一塊石頭壘在石頭上的光景。

論塞魯士說：他是我的牧人，必成就我所喜悅的，必下令建造耶路撒冷，發命立穩聖殿的根基。

我又舉目觀看，見有四輛車從兩山中間出來；那山是銅山。第一輛車套着紅馬，第二輛車套着黑馬。第三輛車套着白馬，第四輛車套着有斑點的壯馬。我就問與我說話的天使說：「主啊，這是甚麼意思？」天使回答我說：「這是天的四風，是從普天下的主面前出來的。」套着黑馬的車往北方去，白馬跟隨在後；有斑點的馬往南方去。壯馬出來，要在遍地走來走去。天使說：「你們只管在遍地走來走去。」牠們就照樣行了。他又呼叫我說：「看哪，往北方去的已在北方安慰我的心。」耶和華的話臨到我說：「你要從被擄之人中取黑玳、多比雅、耶大雅的金銀。這三人是從巴比倫來到西番雅的兒子約西亞的家裏。當日你要進他的家，取這金銀做冠冕，戴在約撒答的兒子大祭司約書亞的頭上，對他說，萬軍之耶和華如此說：看哪，那名稱為大衛苗裔的，他要在本處長起來，並要建造耶和華的殿。他要建造耶和華的殿，並擔負尊榮，坐在位上掌王權；又必在位上作祭司，使兩職之間籌定和平。這冠冕要歸希連、多比雅、耶大雅，和西番雅的兒子賢，放在耶和華的殿裏為記念。」遠方的人也要來建造耶和華的殿，你們就知道萬軍之耶和華差遣我到你們這裏來。你們若留意聽從耶和華－你們神的話，這事必然成就。
