And the nations will know that the people of Israel went into exile for their sin, because they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies, and they all fell by the sword.

The nations will know that the people of Israel were taken away as prisoners because they sinned against me. They were not faithful to me. So I turned my face away from them. I handed them over to their enemies. All of them were killed by swords.

The nations will then know why Israel was sent away to exile— it was punishment for sin, for they were unfaithful to their God. Therefore, I turned away from them and let their enemies destroy them.

But your iniquities have separated you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.

When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.

“ Many nations will pass by this city, and they will each ask his neighbor,‘ Why has Yahweh done this to this great city?’Then they will answer,‘ Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh their God, worshiped other gods, and served them.’”

I will bring a sword upon you that will execute the vengeance of the covenant. You will be gathered together within your cities, and I will send the pestilence among you. You will be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

I won’t hide my face from them any more; for I have poured out my Spirit on the house of Israel,’ says the Lord Yahweh.”

He said,“ I will hide my face from them. I will see what their end will be; for they are a very perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.

How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and Yahweh had delivered them up?

Why do you stand far off, Yahweh? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of raiders who plundered them. He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.

Jerusalem has grievously sinned. Therefore she has become unclean. All who honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness. Yes, she sighs, and turns backward.

while men come to fight with the Chaldeans, and to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have killed in my anger and in my wrath, and for all whose wickedness I have hidden my face from this city:

Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall come on them; so that they will say in that day,‘ Haven’t these evils come on us because our God is not among us?’I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evil which they have done, in that they have turned to other gods.

You, Yahweh, when you favored me, made my mountain stand strong; but when you hid your face, I was troubled.

He gave them into the hand of the nations. Those who hated them ruled over them.

The captain of the guard took Jeremiah, and said to him,“ Yahweh your God pronounced this evil on this place;and Yahweh has brought it, and done according as he spoke. Because you have sinned against Yahweh, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing has come on you.

All that pass by clap their hands at you. They hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying,“ Is this the city that men called‘ The perfection of beauty, the joy of the whole earth’?”All your enemies have opened their mouth wide against you. They hiss and gnash their teeth. They say,“ We have swallowed her up. Certainly this is the day that we looked for. We have found it. We have seen it.”Yahweh has done that which he planned. He has fulfilled his word that he commanded in the days of old. He has thrown down, and has not pitied. He has caused the enemy to rejoice over you. He has exalted the horn of your adversaries.

This house, which is so high, everyone who passes by it shall be astonished, and shall say,‘ Why has Yahweh done this to this land and to this house?’They shall answer,‘ Because they abandoned Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and took other gods, worshiped them, and served them. Therefore he has brought all this evil on them.’”

There is no one who calls on your name, who stirs himself up to take hold of you; for you have hidden your face from us, and have consumed us by means of our iniquities.

I will wait for Yahweh, who hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.

Who gave Jacob as plunder, and Israel to the robbers? Didn’t Yahweh, he against whom we have sinned? For they would not walk in his ways, and they disobeyed his law.

Therefore I poured out my wrath on them for the blood which they had poured out on the land, and because they had defiled it with their idols.I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries. I judged them according to their way and according to their deeds.When they came to the nations where they went, they profaned my holy name; in that men said of them,‘ These are Yahweh’s people, and have left his land.’But I had respect for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations where they went.“ Therefore tell the house of Israel,‘ The Lord Yahweh says:“ I don’t do this for your sake, house of Israel, but for my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations where you went.I will sanctify my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am Yahweh,” says the Lord Yahweh,“ when I am proven holy in you before their eyes.

Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years.

Then the nations that are left around you will know that I, Yahweh, have built the ruined places, and planted that which was desolate. I, Yahweh, have spoken it, and I will do it.”
