作哀歌云、有名之邑、鞏建海中、為航海者所居、凡寓彼者、無不懾伏、奚傾圮乎、

眾作哀歌云、有名之邑、在彼海中、素稱鞏固、舟楫薈萃之所、鄰邦無不惕伏、今已傾圮、

彼眾為爾作哀歌、謂爾曰、惟爾斯邑、素為航海商賈所集之所、為航海商賈所集之所或作為海民所居之所聲名播揚、甚鞏固於海中、居民大有威勢、使列邦居民、無不畏懼、今竟滅亡、

Then they will take up a lament concerning you and say to you:“‘ How you are destroyed, city of renown, peopled by men of the sea! You were a power on the seas, you and your citizens; you put your terror on all who lived there.

Then they will sing a song of sadness about you. They will say to you,“‘ Famous city, you have been completely destroyed! You were filled with sea traders. You and your citizens were a mighty power on the seas. You terrified everyone who lived in you.

And they will raise a lamentation over you and say to you,“‘ How you have perished, you who were inhabited from the seas, O city renowned, who was mighty on the sea; she and her inhabitants imposed their terror on all her inhabitants!

Then they will wail for you, singing this funeral song:“ O famous island city, once ruler of the sea, how you have been destroyed! Your people, with their naval power, once spread fear around the world.

Then they will lament for you and say of you,‘ How you have perished, city of renown, you who were populated from the seas! She who was powerful on the sea, she and all of her inhabitants inflicted their terror.

And they will take up a song of mourning over you and say to you,‘ How you have perished, you inhabited one, From the seas, you famous city, Which was mighty on the sea, She and her inhabitants, Who imposed her terror On all her inhabitants!

And they will take up a lamentation for you, and say to you:“ How you have perished, O one inhabited by seafaring men, O renowned city, Who was strong at sea, She and her inhabitants, Who caused their terror to be on all her inhabitants!

And they shall take up a lamentation over thee, and say to thee, How art thou destroyed, that wast inhabited by seafaring men, the renowned city, that was strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, that caused their terror to be on all that dwelt there!

Then they will lament for you and say of you: How you have perished, city of renown, you who were populated from the seas! She who was powerful on the sea, she and all of her inhabitants inflicted their terror.

And they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and say to thee, How art thou destroyed,[ that wast] inhabited of seafaring men, the renowned city, which wast strong in the sea, she and her inhabitants, which cause their terror[ to be] on all that haunt it!

They will sing this lament over you:“‘ How you have perished– you have vanished from the seas, O renowned city, once mighty in the sea, she and her inhabitants, who spread their terror!

How you have fallen from heaven, shining one, son of the dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low!

“ Moreover, take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel,

How the mighty have fallen in the middle of the battle! Jonathan was slain on your high places.I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan. You have been very pleasant to me. Your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war have perished!”

The kings of the earth who committed sexual immorality and lived wantonly with her will weep and wail over her, when they look at the smoke of her burning,standing far away for the fear of her torment, saying,‘ Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For your judgment has come in one hour.’

Be ashamed, Sidon; for the sea has spoken, the stronghold of the sea, saying,“ I have not travailed, nor given birth, neither have I nourished young men, nor brought up virgins.”

‘ Son of man, take up a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and tell him,“ You were likened to a young lion of the nations; yet you are as a monster in the seas. You broke out with your rivers, and troubled the waters with your feet, and fouled their rivers.”

saying,‘ Woe, woe, the great city, she who was dressed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls!For in an hour such great riches are made desolate.’ Every ship master, and everyone who sails anywhere, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood far away,and cried out as they looked at the smoke of her burning, saying,‘ What is like the great city?’They cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and mourning, saying,‘ Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had their ships in the sea were made rich by reason of her great wealth!’ For she is made desolate in one hour.

“‘“ This is the lamentation with which they will lament. The daughters of the nations will lament with this. They will lament with it over Egypt, and over all her multitude,” says the Lord Yahweh.’”

“ You, son of man, take up a lamentation over Tyre;and tell Tyre,‘ You who dwell at the entry of the sea, who are the merchant of the peoples to many islands, the Lord Yahweh says:“ You, Tyre, have said,‘ I am perfect in beauty.’Your borders are in the heart of the seas. Your builders have perfected your beauty.They have made all your planks of cypress trees from Senir. They have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.They have made your oars of the oaks of Bashan. They have made your benches of ivory inlaid in cypress wood from the islands of Kittim.Your sail was of fine linen with embroidered work from Egypt, that it might be to you for a banner. Blue and purple from the islands of Elishah was your awning.The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers. Your wise men, Tyre, were in you. They were your pilots.The old men of Gebal and its wise men were your repairers of ship seams in you. All the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you to deal in your merchandise.“‘“ Persia, Lud, and Put were in your army, your men of war. They hung the shield and helmet in you. They showed your beauty.The men of Arvad with your army were on your walls all around, and valiant men were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around. They have perfected your beauty.“‘“ Tarshish was your merchant by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches. They traded for your wares with silver, iron, tin, and lead.“‘“ Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your traders. They traded the persons of men and vessels of bronze for your merchandise.“‘“ They of the house of Togarmah traded for your wares with horses, war horses, and mules.“‘“ The men of Dedan traded with you. Many islands were the market of your hand. They brought you horns of ivory and ebony in exchange.“‘“ Syria was your merchant by reason of the multitude of your handiworks. They traded for your wares with emeralds, purple, embroidered work, fine linen, coral, and rubies.“‘“ Judah and the land of Israel were your traders. They traded wheat of Minnith, confections, honey, oil, and balm for your merchandise.“‘“ Damascus was your merchant for the multitude of your handiworks, by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches, with the wine of Helbon, and white wool.“‘“ Vedan and Javan traded with yarn for your wares: bright iron, cassia, and calamus were among your merchandise.“‘“ Dedan was your trafficker in precious cloths for riding.“‘“ Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar were the merchants of your hand; in lambs, rams, and goats. In these, they were your merchants.“‘“ The traders of Sheba and Raamah were your traders. They traded for your wares with the chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold.“‘“ Haran, Canneh, and Eden, the traders of Sheba, Asshur and Chilmad, were your traders.These were your traders in choice wares, in wrappings of blue and embroidered work, and in chests of rich clothing, bound with cords and made of cedar, among your merchandise.“‘“ The ships of Tarshish were your caravans for your merchandise. You were replenished and made very glorious in the heart of the seas.Your rowers have brought you into great waters. The east wind has broken you in the heart of the seas.Your riches, your wares, your merchandise, your mariners, your pilots, your repairers of ship seams, the dealers in your merchandise, and all your men of war, who are in you, with all your company which is among you, will fall into the heart of the seas in the day of your ruin.At the sound of the cry of your pilots, the pasture lands will shake.All who handle the oars, the mariners and all the pilots of the sea, will come down from their ships. They will stand on the land,and will cause their voice to be heard over you, and will cry bitterly. They will cast up dust on their heads. They will wallow in the ashes.They will make themselves bald for you, and clothe themselves with sackcloth. They will weep for you in bitterness of soul, with bitter mourning.In their wailing they will take up a lamentation for you, and lament over you, saying,‘ Who is there like Tyre, like her who is brought to silence in the middle of the sea?’When your wares went out of the seas, you filled many peoples. You enriched the kings of the earth with the multitude of your riches and of your merchandise.In the time that you were broken by the seas, in the depths of the waters, your merchandise and all your company fell within you.All the inhabitants of the islands are astonished at you, and their kings are horribly afraid. They are troubled in their face.The merchants among the peoples hiss at you. You have become a terror, and you will be no more.”’”

Fire has gone out of its branches. It has devoured its fruit, so that there is in it no strong branch to be a scepter to rule.’ This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.”

Who has planned this against Tyre, the giver of crowns, whose merchants are princes, whose traders are the honorable of the earth?

Daughter of my people, clothe yourself with sackcloth, and wallow in ashes! Mourn, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation, for the destroyer will suddenly come on us.

“ Son of man, tell the prince of Tyre,‘ The Lord Yahweh says:“ Because your heart is lifted up, and you have said,‘ I am a god, I sit in the seat of God, in the middle of the seas;’ yet you are man, and not God, though you set your heart as the heart of God—behold, you are wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that is hidden from you;by your wisdom and by your understanding you have gotten yourself riches, and have gotten gold and silver into your treasures;by your great wisdom and by your trading you have increased your riches, and your heart is lifted up because of your riches—”“‘ therefore the Lord Yahweh says:“ Because you have set your heart as the heart of God,therefore, behold, I will bring strangers on you, the terrible of the nations. They will draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom. They will defile your brightness.They will bring you down to the pit. You will die the death of those who are slain in the heart of the seas.Will you yet say before him who kills you,‘ I am God’? But you are man, and not God, in the hand of him who wounds you.You will die the death of the uncircumcised by the hand of strangers; for I have spoken it,” says the Lord Yahweh.’”

“ Your glory, Israel, was slain on your high places! How the mighty have fallen!

Cut off your hair, and throw it away, and take up a lamentation on the bare heights; for Yahweh has rejected and forsaken the generation of his wrath.

The border turned to Ramah, to the fortified city of Tyre; and the border turned to Hosah. It ended at the sea by the region of Achzib;

This is the joyous city that lived carelessly, that said in her heart,“ I am, and there is no one besides me.” How she has become a desolation, a place for animals to lie down in! Everyone who passes by her will hiss, and shake their fists.

How the animals groan! The herds of livestock are perplexed, because they have no pasture. Yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.

“ Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and tell him,‘ The Lord Yahweh says:“ You were the seal of full measure, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.You were in Eden, the garden of God. Every precious stone adorned you: ruby, topaz, emerald, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and beryl. Gold work of tambourines and of pipes was in you. They were prepared in the day that you were created.You were the anointed cherub who covers. Then I set you up on the holy mountain of God. You have walked up and down in the middle of the stones of fire.You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until unrighteousness was found in you.By the abundance of your commerce, your insides were filled with violence, and you have sinned. Therefore I have cast you as profane out of God’s mountain. I have destroyed you, covering cherub, from the middle of the stones of fire.Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty. You have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor. I have cast you to the ground. I have laid you before kings, that they may see you.By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your commerce, you have profaned your sanctuaries. Therefore I have brought out a fire from the middle of you. It has devoured you. I have turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all those who see you.All those who know you among the peoples will be astonished at you. You have become a terror, and you will exist no more.”’”

How the city sits solitary, that was full of people! She has become as a widow, who was great among the nations! She who was a princess among the provinces has become a slave!

In that day they will take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, saying,‘ We are utterly ruined! My people’s possession is divided up. Indeed he takes it from me and assigns our fields to traitors!’”

Yet hear Yahweh’s word, you women. Let your ear receive the word of his mouth. Teach your daughters wailing, and everyone teach her neighbor a lamentation.

“ If thieves came to you, if robbers by night— oh, what disaster awaits you— wouldn’t they only steal until they had enough? If grape pickers came to you, wouldn’t they leave some gleaning grapes?
