But for the sake of my name, I brought them out of Egypt. I did it to keep my name from being profaned in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived and in whose sight I had revealed myself to the Israelites.

I wanted my name to be honored. So I brought my people out of Egypt. I did it to keep my name from being treated as if it were not holy. I didn’t want this to happen in front of the nations around my people. I had made myself known to Israel in the sight of those nations.

But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made myself known to them in bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

But I didn’t do it, for I acted to protect the honor of my name. I would not allow shame to be brought on my name among the surrounding nations who saw me reveal myself by bringing the Israelites out of Egypt.

But I acted for the sake of my name, so that it would not be profaned in the eyes of the nations they were living among, in whose sight I had made myself known to Israel by bringing them out of Egypt.

But I acted for the sake of My name, that it would not be defiled in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made Myself known to them by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

I acted for the sake of my reputation, so that I would not be profaned before the nations among whom they lived, before whom I revealed myself by bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

But I worked for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among which they were, in whose sight I made myself known to them, in bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

我顧惜我的聖名，就是以色列人在所去的列國褻瀆的聖名。「因此，你要告訴以色列人，主耶和華這樣說，『以色列人啊，我要行這事並非因為你們的緣故，而是因為我聖名的緣故，就是你們在所去列國褻瀆的聖名。

難道你要讓埃及人議論說你領他們出來是出於惡意，是為了在山野之間殺掉他們，從地上滅絕他們嗎？求你息怒，施憐憫，不要降禍給你的子民。

迦南人和這一帶的人聽到這消息以後，必從四面八方來圍攻我們，將我們從地上斬盡殺絕。那時候，你的威名又何在呢？」

免得你帶領我們離開之地的人說，你不能把他們領到你應許給他們的地方，你憎惡他們，所以把他們帶到曠野殺了。

我們大禍臨頭了！誰能從這些大能的神明手中救我們？在曠野用各種災禍毀滅埃及人的就是這些神明。

耶和華不會丟棄祂的子民，使自己的大名受損，祂樂意使你們做祂的子民。

我本要消滅他們，使世人忘記他們；但我不願讓敵人誇口，宣稱這是他們的勝利，而非我的作為。』

因為你們離開埃及過紅海的時候，耶和華怎樣使紅海在你們面前成為乾地，你們怎樣對付約旦河東的兩個亞摩利王西宏和噩，怎樣把他們徹底消滅，我們都聽說了。

摩西對耶和華說：「你曾經用大能把以色列人從埃及領出來，埃及人聽說這事後，一定會告訴迦南的居民。那裡的居民早已聽說你耶和華與以色列人同在，你面對面向他們顯現，你的雲彩停留在他們上面，你白天用雲柱、黑夜用火柱引導他們。如果你把他們全部消滅，那些聽過你威名的列國就會議論說，『耶和華無法把以色列人領到祂起誓要賜給他們的地方，所以在曠野把他們殺了。』因此，求主彰顯偉大的權能，正如你所宣告的，『耶和華不輕易發怒，充滿慈愛；祂赦免罪惡和過犯，但決不免除罪責，必向子孫追討父輩的罪債，直到三四代。』從他們離開埃及直到現在，你一直在饒恕他們，求你以偉大的慈愛再次赦免這些人的罪。」耶和華說：「我聽你的祈求，赦免他們。但我憑我的永恆起誓，正如大地充滿我的榮耀一樣確實，他們絕對看不到我起誓要賜給他們祖先的土地，藐視我的人都看不到那片土地。這些人見過我的榮耀，見過我在埃及和曠野所行的神蹟，卻仍然不聽我的話，試探我十次之多。

他們答道：「僕人們從很遠的地方來。我們聽說了你的上帝耶和華的威名，聽說了祂在埃及的一切作為，以及祂怎樣對付約旦河東的兩個亞摩利王——希實本王西宏和亞斯她錄的巴珊王噩。
