But for the sake of my name, I brought them out of Egypt. I did it to keep my name from being profaned in the eyes of the nations among whom they lived and in whose sight I had revealed myself to the Israelites.

I wanted my name to be honored. So I brought my people out of Egypt. I did it to keep my name from being treated as if it were not holy. I didn’t want this to happen in front of the nations around my people. I had made myself known to Israel in the sight of those nations.

But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made myself known to them in bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

But I didn’t do it, for I acted to protect the honor of my name. I would not allow shame to be brought on my name among the surrounding nations who saw me reveal myself by bringing the Israelites out of Egypt.

But I acted for the sake of my name, so that it would not be profaned in the eyes of the nations they were living among, in whose sight I had made myself known to Israel by bringing them out of Egypt.

But I worked for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, among which they were, in whose sight I made myself known to them, in bringing them out of the land of Egypt.

难道你要让埃及人议论说你领他们出来是出于恶意，是为了在山野之间杀掉他们，从地上灭绝他们吗？求你息怒，施怜悯，不要降祸给你的子民。

迦南人和这一带的人听到这消息以后，必从四面八方来围攻我们，将我们从地上斩尽杀绝。那时候，你的威名又何在呢？”

免得你带领我们离开之地的人说，你不能把他们领到你应许给他们的地方，你憎恶他们，所以把他们带到旷野杀了。

我们大祸临头了！谁能从这些大能的神明手中救我们？在旷野用各种灾祸毁灭埃及人的就是这些神明。

耶和华不会丢弃祂的子民，使自己的大名受损，祂乐意使你们做祂的子民。

我本要消灭他们，使世人忘记他们；但我不愿让敌人夸口，宣称这是他们的胜利，而非我的作为。’

因为你们离开埃及过红海的时候，耶和华怎样使红海在你们面前成为干地，你们怎样对付约旦河东的两个亚摩利王西宏和噩，怎样把他们彻底消灭，我们都听说了。

摩西对耶和华说：“你曾经用大能把以色列人从埃及领出来，埃及人听说这事后，一定会告诉迦南的居民。那里的居民早已听说你耶和华与以色列人同在，你面对面向他们显现，你的云彩停留在他们上面，你白天用云柱、黑夜用火柱引导他们。如果你把他们全部消灭，那些听过你威名的列国就会议论说，‘耶和华无法把以色列人领到祂起誓要赐给他们的地方，所以在旷野把他们杀了。’因此，求主彰显伟大的权能，正如你所宣告的，‘耶和华不轻易发怒，充满慈爱；祂赦免罪恶和过犯，但决不免除罪责，必向子孙追讨父辈的罪债，直到三四代。’从他们离开埃及直到现在，你一直在饶恕他们，求你以伟大的慈爱再次赦免这些人的罪。”耶和华说：“我听你的祈求，赦免他们。但我凭我的永恒起誓，正如大地充满我的荣耀一样确实，他们绝对看不到我起誓要赐给他们祖先的土地，藐视我的人都看不到那片土地。这些人见过我的荣耀，见过我在埃及和旷野所行的神迹，却仍然不听我的话，试探我十次之多。

他们答道：“仆人们从很远的地方来。我们听说了你的上帝耶和华的威名，听说了祂在埃及的一切作为，以及祂怎样对付约旦河东的两个亚摩利王——希实本王西宏和亚斯她录的巴珊王噩。
