And if the man is poor, you shall not keep his pledge overnight.You shall in any case return the pledge to him again when the sun goes down, that he may sleep in his own garment and bless you; and it shall be righteousness to you before the Lord your God.

if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

They lie down by every altar on clothes taken in pledge, And drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.

For they do not know to do right,’ Says the Lord,‘ Who store up violence and robbery in their palaces.’”

“ As for his father, Because he cruelly oppressed, Robbed his brother by violence, And did what is not good among his people, Behold, he shall die for his iniquity.

He answered and said to them,“ He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.”

Their webs will not become garments, Nor will they cover themselves with their works; Their works are works of iniquity, And the act of violence is in their hands.Their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed innocent blood; Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; Wasting and destruction are in their paths.

But as you abound in everything— in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love for us— see that you abound in this grace also.I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.

Do not rob the poor because he is poor, Nor oppress the afflicted at the gate;For the Lord will plead their cause, And plunder the soul of those who plunder them.

“ Also you shall not oppress a stranger, for you know the heart of a stranger, because you were strangers in the land of Egypt.

One who increases his possessions by usury and extortion Gathers it for him who will pity the poor.

You who hate good and love evil; Who strip the skin from My people, And the flesh from their bones;

“ Some snatch the fatherless from the breast, And take a pledge from the poor.

And if you sell anything to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor’s hand, you shall not oppress one another.

He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, But he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.

For you have taken pledges from your brother for no reason, And stripped the naked of their clothing.

Here I am. Witness against me before the Lord and before His anointed: Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed, or from whose hand have I received any bribe with which to blind my eyes? I will restore it to you.”And they said,“ You have not cheated us or oppressed us, nor have you taken anything from any man’s hand.”

Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, Who cause the seat of violence to come near;

He judged the cause of the poor and needy; Then it was well. Was not this knowing Me?” says the Lord.“ Yet your eyes and your heart are for nothing but your covetousness, For shedding innocent blood, And practicing oppression and violence.”

He who gives to the poor will not lack, But he who hides his eyes will have many curses.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.

if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, or walk after other gods to your hurt,then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.

He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever; His horn will be exalted with honor.

‘ Make a chain, For the land is filled with crimes of blood, And the city is full of violence.

Woe to those who devise iniquity, And work out evil on their beds! At morning light they practice it, Because it is in the power of their hand.

He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, He who despises the gain of oppressions, Who gestures with his hands, refusing bribes, Who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, And shuts his eyes from seeing evil:

Do not envy the oppressor, And choose none of his ways;

‘ You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor.

Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood, to destroy people, and to get dishonest gain.Her prophets plastered them with untempered mortar, seeing false visions, and divining lies for them, saying,‘ Thus says the Lord GOD,’ when the Lord had not spoken.The people of the land have used oppressions, committed robbery, and mistreated the poor and needy; and they wrongfully oppress the stranger.

“ You shall neither mistreat a stranger nor oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.“ You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child.If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all to Me, I will surely hear their cry;and My wrath will become hot, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,and one of you says to them,“ Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Hear this, you who swallow up the needy, And make the poor of the land fail,Saying:“ When will the New Moon be past, That we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, That we may trade wheat? Making the ephah small and the shekel large, Falsifying the scales by deceit,That we may buy the poor for silver, And the needy for a pair of sandals— Even sell the bad wheat?”

The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.

“ If there is among you a poor man of your brethren, within any of the gates in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother,but you shall open your hand wide to him and willingly lend him sufficient for his need, whatever he needs.Beware lest there be a wicked thought in your heart, saying,‘ The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand,’ and your eye be evil against your poor brother and you give him nothing, and he cry out to the Lord against you, and it become sin among you.You shall surely give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this thing the Lord your God will bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand.For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying,‘ You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’

Blessed is he who considers the poor; The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.

But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.As it is written:“ He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.”Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness,while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God.For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God,while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and all men,and by their prayer for you, who long for you because of the exceeding grace of God in you.

Therefore, because you tread down the poor And take grain taxes from him, Though you have built houses of hewn stone, Yet you shall not dwell in them; You have planted pleasant vineyards, But you shall not drink wine from them.For I know your manifold transgressions And your mighty sins: Afflicting the just and taking bribes; Diverting the poor from justice at the gate.

Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

Learn to do good; Seek justice, Rebuke the oppressor; Defend the fatherless, Plead for the widow.

Then the King will say to those on His right hand,‘ Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in;I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’“ Then the righteous will answer Him, saying,‘ Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink?When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You?Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’And the King will answer and say to them,‘ Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’“ Then He will also say to those on the left hand,‘ Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink;I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’“ Then they also will answer Him, saying,‘ Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’Then He will answer them, saying,‘ Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take usury and increase; you have made profit from your neighbors by extortion, and have forgotten Me,” says the Lord GOD.“ Behold, therefore, I beat My fists at the dishonest profit which you have made, and at the bloodshed which has been in your midst.

“ You shall not pervert justice due the stranger or the fatherless, nor take a widow’s garment as a pledge.

Thus says the Lord:“ Execute judgment and righteousness, and deliver the plundered out of the hand of the oppressor. Do no wrong and do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, or the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place.

In the same day I will punish All those who leap over the threshold, Who fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit.

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, And the men of Judah are His pleasant plant. He looked for justice, but behold, oppression; For righteousness, but behold, a cry for help.

They drive away the donkey of the fatherless; They take the widow’s ox as a pledge.

“ If I have despised the cause of my male or female servant When they complained against me,What then shall I do when God rises up? When He punishes, how shall I answer Him?Did not He who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same One fashion us in the womb?“ If I have kept the poor from their desire, Or caused the eyes of the widow to fail,Or eaten my morsel by myself, So that the fatherless could not eat of it( But from my youth I reared him as a father, And from my mother’s womb I guided the widow);If I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing, Or any poor man without covering;If his heart has not blessed me, And if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;If I have raised my hand against the fatherless, When I saw I had help in the gate;Then let my arm fall from my shoulder, Let my arm be torn from the socket.

There is one who scatters, yet increases more; And there is one who withholds more than is right, But it leads to poverty.The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.

“ Thus says the Lord of hosts:‘ Execute true justice, Show mercy and compassion Everyone to his brother.Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, The alien or the poor. Let none of you plan evil in his heart Against his brother.’“ But they refused to heed, shrugged their shoulders, and stopped their ears so that they could not hear.

And I will come near you for judgment; I will be a swift witness Against sorcerers, Against adulterers, Against perjurers, Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans, And against those who turn away an alien— Because they do not fear Me,” Says the Lord of hosts.

“ Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; You shall cry, and He will say,‘ Here I am.’“ If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday.The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

Thus says the Lord:“ For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, Because they sell the righteous for silver, And the poor for a pair of sandals.
