And if he is a poor man, you shall not sleep in his pledge.You shall restore to him the pledge as the sun sets, that he may sleep in his cloak and bless you. And it shall be righteousness for you before the Lord your God.

if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

they lay themselves down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.

“ They do not know how to do right,” declares the Lord,“ those who store up violence and robbery in their strongholds.”

As for his father, because he practiced extortion, robbed his brother, and did what is not good among his people, behold, he shall die for his iniquity.

And he answered them,“ Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”

Their webs will not serve as clothing; men will not cover themselves with what they make. Their works are works of iniquity, and deeds of violence are in their hands.Their feet run to evil, and they are swift to shed innocent blood; their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; desolation and destruction are in their highways.

But as you excel in everything— in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you— see that you excel in this act of grace also.I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

Do not rob the poor, because he is poor, or crush the afflicted at the gate,for the Lord will plead their cause and rob of life those who rob them.

“ You shall not oppress a sojourner. You know the heart of a sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

Whoever multiplies his wealth by interest and profit gathers it for him who is generous to the poor.

you who hate the good and love the evil, who tear the skin from off my people and their flesh from off their bones,

( There are those who snatch the fatherless child from the breast, and they take a pledge against the poor.)

And if you make a sale to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor, you shall not wrong one another.

Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.

For you have exacted pledges of your brothers for nothing and stripped the naked of their clothing.

Here I am; testify against me before the Lord and before his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? Testify against me and I will restore it to you.”They said,“ You have not defrauded us or oppressed us or taken anything from any man’s hand.”

O you who put far away the day of disaster and bring near the seat of violence?

He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well. Is not this to know me? declares the Lord.But you have eyes and heart only for your dishonest gain, for shedding innocent blood, and for practicing oppression and violence.”

Whoever gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days.Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you.

if you do not oppress the sojourner, the fatherless, or the widow, or shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not go after other gods to your own harm,then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave of old to your fathers forever.

He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.

“ Forge a chain! For the land is full of bloody crimes and the city is full of violence.

Woe to those who devise wickedness and work evil on their beds! When the morning dawns, they perform it, because it is in the power of their hand.

He who walks righteously and speaks uprightly, who despises the gain of oppressions, who shakes his hands, lest they hold a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed and shuts his eyes from looking on evil,

Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways,

“ You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.

Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, shedding blood, destroying lives to get dishonest gain.And her prophets have smeared whitewash for them, seeing false visions and divining lies for them, saying,‘ Thus says the Lord God,’ when the Lord has not spoken.The people of the land have practiced extortion and committed robbery. They have oppressed the poor and needy, and have extorted from the sojourner without justice.

“ You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.You shall not mistreat any widow or fatherless child.If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry,and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless.

For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food,and one of you says to them,“ Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

Hear this, you who trample on the needy and bring the poor of the land to an end,saying,“ When will the new moon be over, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may offer wheat for sale, that we may make the ephah small and the shekel great and deal deceitfully with false balances,that we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals and sell the chaff of the wheat?”

Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight, and the earth was filled with violence.And God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.

“ If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother,but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be.Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say,‘ The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye look grudgingly on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the Lord against you, and you be guilty of sin.You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake.For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you,‘ You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’

Blessed is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the Lord delivers him;

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.As it is written,“ He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others,while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you.

Therefore because you trample on the poor and you exact taxes of grain from him, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.For I know how many are your transgressions and how great are your sins— you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and turn aside the needy in the gate.

Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous.

learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.

Then the King will say to those on his right,‘ Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’Then the righteous will answer him, saying,‘ Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you?And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’And the King will answer them,‘ Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’“ Then he will say to those on his left,‘ Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’Then they also will answer, saying,‘ Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’Then he will answer them, saying,‘ Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take interest and profit and make gain of your neighbors by extortion; but me you have forgotten, declares the Lord God.“ Behold, I strike my hand at the dishonest gain that you have made, and at the blood that has been in your midst.

“ You shall not pervert the justice due to the sojourner or to the fatherless, or take a widow’s garment in pledge,

Thus says the Lord: Do justice and righteousness, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed. And do no wrong or violence to the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, nor shed innocent blood in this place.

On that day I will punish everyone who leaps over the threshold, and those who fill their master’s house with violence and fraud.

For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, an outcry!

They drive away the donkey of the fatherless; they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

“ If I have rejected the cause of my manservant or my maidservant, when they brought a complaint against me,what then shall I do when God rises up? When he makes inquiry, what shall I answer him?Did not he who made me in the womb make him? And did not one fashion us in the womb?“ If I have withheld anything that the poor desired, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it( for from my youth the fatherless grew up with me as with a father, and from my mother’s womb I guided the widow),if I have seen anyone perish for lack of clothing, or the needy without covering,if his body has not blessed me, and if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep,if I have raised my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate,then let my shoulder blade fall from my shoulder, and let my arm be broken from its socket.

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.

“ Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another,do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.”But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears that they might not hear.

“ Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.

“ Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and he will say,‘ Here I am.’ If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness,if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

Thus says the Lord:“ For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals—
