当年，就是犹大王西底家开始执政的第四年五月，基遍人押朔的儿子哈拿尼雅先知，在耶和华殿中，当着祭司和众民的面前对我说：

耶和华说：‘恶人没有平安。’”

恶人却像翻腾的海，不能平静，海中的水不住翻起污秽和淤泥来。我的神说：“恶人必没有平安。”

但预言平安的先知，除非他的话应验，人才会承认他确实是耶和华所差遣的先知。”于是哈拿尼雅先知把耶利米先知颈项上的轭取下来，折断了。哈拿尼雅又当着众民面前说：“耶和华这样说：‘两年之内，我必这样从列国的颈项上，折断巴比伦王尼布甲尼撒的轭。’”于是耶利米先知就走了。哈拿尼雅先知把耶利米先知颈项上的轭折断了以后，耶和华的话就临到耶利米，说：“你去告诉哈拿尼雅说：‘耶和华这样说：你折断了木轭，却要换来铁轭。因为万军之耶和华以色列的神这样说：我要把铁轭套在这些国家的颈项上，使他们服事巴比伦王尼布甲尼撒；他们要服事他，连田野的走兽，我也交给他了。’”耶利米先知就对哈拿尼雅先知说：“哈拿尼雅啊！你要听，耶和华并没有差遣你，你竟使这人民信靠谎言。因此耶和华这样说：‘看哪！我必使你离开人世；你今年一定死，因为你说了悖逆耶和华的话。’”这样，在当年七月，哈拿尼雅先知就死了。
