Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant— the Ten Commandments.

耶和華在西奈山對摩西說完這些話以後，就把自己用指頭刻上誡命的兩塊石版交給摩西。

摩西上到山上，走進雲中，在那裡停留了四十晝夜。

「因為耶和華說要毀滅你們，我就俯伏在耶和華面前四十晝夜，

「我又俯伏在耶和華面前，四十晝夜不吃不喝，因為你們犯了大罪，做耶和華憎惡的事，惹祂發怒。

那時，我上山去接受耶和華與你們立約的石版，在山上待了四十晝夜，不吃也不喝。

石版是上帝做的，字是上帝刻的。

這最終帶來死亡、刻在石版上的律法條文的事工尚且有榮耀，甚至使摩西的臉上發出榮光，儘管很快就消逝了，以色列人仍然無法定睛看他，

我要把你摔碎的那兩塊石版上的話重新寫在你鑿的石版上。你要把它們放在櫃子裡。』於是，我用皂莢木做了一個櫃子，又鑿了兩塊石版，與前兩塊石版一樣，然後帶著石版上了山。耶和華把你們在山腳下聚會時祂在山上的火焰中向你們頒佈的十條誡命，重新刻在石版上，並把石版交給我。
