耶和華－你的神必將這些國從你面前漸漸趕出；你不可迅速把他們消滅，免得野地的走獸多起來危害你。

耶和華留下這些國家，為要考驗所有未曾經歷迦南任何戰役的以色列人，只是為了要以色列人的後代認識戰爭，教導他們，尤其那些未曾認識這些事的人。留下的有非利士的五個領袖，所有的迦南人，西頓人，以及從巴力‧黑門山到哈馬口，住黎巴嫩山的希未人。他們是為了要考驗以色列，好知道他們是否肯聽從耶和華藉摩西吩咐他們列祖的命令。

只是瑪拿西的子孫不能趕出這些城鎮的居民，迦南人仍堅持住在那地。以色列人強盛的時候，就叫迦南人做苦工，沒有把他們全然趕走。

至於住耶路撒冷的耶布斯人，猶大人不能把他們趕出去。於是，耶布斯人與猶大人同住在耶路撒冷，直到今日。

他們卻沒有趕出住在基色的迦南人。迦南人就住在以法蓮人中，成為服勞役的僕人，直到今日。
