瑪拿西誘使猶大人和耶路撒冷的居民作惡，比耶和華在以色列人面前所毀滅的各族更嚴重。

他執政第八年，雖然還年幼，卻開始尋求他祖先大衛的上帝。他執政第十二年，開始清除猶大和耶路撒冷的邱壇、亞舍拉神像、雕刻和鑄造的偶像。眾人在他面前拆毀巴力的祭壇，他砍掉高高的香壇，又把亞舍拉神像及雕刻和鑄造的偶像磨成粉末，撒在祭拜它們之人的墳墓上，把它們祭司的骸骨放在它們的壇上焚燒。這樣，他潔淨了猶大和耶路撒冷。約西亞還在瑪拿西、以法蓮、西緬，遠至拿弗他利的各城邑及其周圍的荒廢之地做了同樣的事情。他拆毀祭壇和亞舍拉神像，把偶像磨成粉末，砍掉以色列境內所有的香壇，然後回到耶路撒冷。

你不僅追隨她們可憎的行徑，還很快超過了她們。

你們要燒毀他們的神像，不可貪圖神像上的金銀，不可將那些金銀據為己有，免得你們因此陷入網羅；因為那是你們的上帝耶和華所憎惡的。不可把可憎之物帶到家裡，否則你們會像它們一樣被毀滅。你們要極其憎惡、厭棄它們，因為它們是當毀滅之物。

我要棄絕惡事，我憎惡背棄上帝者的行為，不沾染他們的惡行。

又把他們鑄造的牛犢熔化掉，磨成粉末撒在水面上，叫以色列百姓喝。

相反，要拆掉他們的祭壇，打碎他們的神柱，砍掉他們的亞舍拉神像。不可拜別的神明，因為耶和華是痛恨不貞的上帝，祂名為『痛恨不貞』。」

他做耶和華視為惡的事，效法耶和華在以色列人面前趕走的外族人的可憎行徑。

反倒與他們混居，仿效他們的習俗，拜他們的神像，陷入網羅。他們把自己的兒女當祭物獻給鬼魔，他們把自己的兒女獻給迦南的神像作祭物，流他們兒女無辜的血，玷污了那地方。
