會堂的主管因為耶穌在安息日治病，就很生氣，對眾人說：「有六天應當做工，那六天之內可以來求醫，在安息日卻不可。」

六日要勞碌做你一切的工，但第七日是向耶和華－你的神當守的安息日。這一日，你和你的兒女、僕婢、牛、驢、牲畜，以及你城裏寄居的客旅，都不可做任何的工，使你的僕婢可以和你一樣休息。你要記念你在埃及地作過奴僕，耶和華－你的神用大能的手和伸出來的膀臂領你從那裏出來。因此，耶和華－你的神吩咐你守安息日。

六日要做工，但第七日是向耶和華守完全安息的安息聖日。凡在安息日做工的，必被處死。』以色列人要守安息日，世世代代守安息日為永遠的約。

「我們禁食，你為何不看呢？我們刻苦己心，你為何不理會呢？」看哪，你們禁食的時候仍追求私利，剝削為你們做苦工的人。

在安息日這一天，不可在你們一切的住處生火。」
