Phinehas stuck the spear through the man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the Lord stopped the plague against the Israelites.

Jerusalem’s officials are like roaring lions. Their rulers are like wolves that hunt in the evening. They don’t leave anything to eat in the morning.

“‘ The land must not be sold without a way of getting it back. That is because it belongs to me. You are only outsiders and strangers in my land.

“ Suppose some people are fighting and one of them hits a pregnant woman. And suppose she has her baby early but is not badly hurt. Then the one who hurt her must pay a fine. That person must pay what the woman’s husband asks for and the court allows.

Achish trusted David. He thought,“ David’s own people, the Israelites, can’t stand him anymore. So he’ll be my servant for life.”

“ That same night I will pass through Egypt. I will strike down all those born first among the people and animals. And I will judge all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord.

They replied,“ Serve them today. Give them what they are asking for. Then they’ll always serve you.”

But suppose the thief is not found. Then the neighbor must go to the judges. Or you have other property lost by someone else. And suppose someone says,‘ That belongs to me.’ Then both people must bring their case to the judges. The one the judges decide is guilty must pay back twice as much to the other person.

Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes. Do it in every town the Lord your God is giving you. They must judge the people fairly.

“ Do not speak evil things against God. Do not curse the ruler of your people.

When Samuel became old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders.The name of his oldest son was Joel. The name of his second son was Abijah. They served as judges at Beersheba.

Appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.Let them serve the people as judges. But have them bring every hard case to you. They can decide the easy ones themselves. That will make your load lighter. They will share it with you.If this is what God wants and if you do it, then you will be able to carry the load. And all these people will go home satisfied.”Moses listened to his father- in- law. He did everything Jethro said.He chose men of ability from the whole community of Israel. He made them leaders of the people. They became officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard cases to Moses. But they decided the easy ones themselves.

You didn’t want sacrifices and offerings. You didn’t require burnt offerings and sin offerings. You opened my ears so that I could hear you and obey you.Then I said,“ Here I am. It is written about me in the book.My God, I have come to do what you want. Your law is in my heart.”

I will give you leaders like the ones you had long ago. I will give you rulers like those you had at the beginning. Then you will be called the City That Does What Is Right. You will also be called the Faithful City.”
