那时，摩西正在牧放他岳父米甸祭司叶忒罗的羊群。有一次，他把羊群领到旷野的尽头去，到了神的山，就是何烈山。

以色列全体会众都照着耶和华的吩咐，一站一站，从汛的旷野起程，在利非订安营。在那里人民没有水喝。

神回答：“我必与你同在；你把人民从埃及领出来的时候，你们要在这山上事奉神；这就是我派你去的凭据。”

摩西的岳父叶忒罗，和摩西的妻子与两个儿子，来到旷野摩西那里，就是到神的山，摩西安营的地方。

那时亚玛力人来了，在利非订和以色列人争战。

“过了四十年，在西奈山的旷野，有一位使者，在荆棘中的火焰里，向摩西显现。

那曾经在旷野的大会中，和那在西奈山上对他说话的使者同在，也与我们的祖先同在的，就是他。他领受了活的圣言，传给我们。

这都是寓意的说法：那两个妇人就是两个约，一个是出于西奈山，生子作奴仆，这是夏甲。
