王后瓦實提卻不肯遵王由太監經手所傳的命令而來；因此王非常生氣，烈怒中燒。王就問識時務的智慧人——因為王有這樣的常規：要在一切知法令明執政的人面前先問一下。那時跟王接近的有甲示拿、示達、押瑪他、他施斯、米力、瑪西拿、米母干、波斯瑪代的七個大臣，都是常見王面、在國中坐首位的人——王問他們說：『王后瓦實提不遵行亞哈隨魯王由太監經手所傳的命令，照法令應當怎樣辦呢？』米母干在王和首領們面前回答說：『王后瓦實提所作的不但得罪了王，也損害了眾首長、和亞哈隨魯王各省內各族之民。王后所作的這事必傳出去到眾婦女耳中，以致她們的丈夫被看為可藐視的，因為他們必說：「亞哈隨魯王吩咐人領王后，瓦實提到他面前，而王后卻沒有來。」就在今天，波斯瑪代的貴婦們聽見王后所作的這事就必告訴王的眾大臣，那麼藐視和惱怒就夠普遍了。王若以為好，就請從王面前出一道御旨，寫在波斯瑪代人的法令中，好使永不廢墮；使瓦實提不再到亞哈隨魯王面前；又請王將她的王后位分賜給比她好的人。王的詔諭、王所要寫的諭旨、若在王全國中都傳遍了，那麼國境儘管很大，所有的婦女也會尊敬丈夫，無論丈夫尊大或卑小。』王和眾首領對米母干的提議都很滿意；王就照他的提議去行。

王聽見了這話，就非常難過，立意要解救但以理；他苦思焦慮到日落、要援救他。那些人就彼此串通來見王，對王說：『王啊，你知道瑪代波斯人有一條例：凡王所立的一切禁令和法典都是不可更改的啊。』於是王下了令，人就把但以理帶了來，扔在獅子坑中。王應時對但以理說：『願你的上帝、你所不斷事奉的、願他解救你！』有人搬了一塊石頭放在坑口，王用他自己的國璽和他大臣們的圖章封閉那坑，使懲辦但以理的事不得更改。王回了宮，不喫而過夜；任何娛樂都沒有讓人帶到他面前；連睡眠都跑掉了。
