我转眼又看到日光之下：快跑的未必赛赢，勇士未必战胜，有智慧的未必得粮食，有悟性的未必得财富，明智者未必得恩惠；因为时机和机遇胜过一切。

我又轉念：見日光之下，快跑的未必能贏；力戰的未必得勝；智慧的未必得糧食；明哲的未必得資財；靈巧的未必得喜悅。所臨到眾人的是在乎當時的機會。

我轉眼又看到日光之下：快跑的未必賽贏，勇士未必戰勝，有智慧的未必得糧食，有悟性的未必得財富，明智者未必得恩惠；因為時機和機遇勝過一切。

我又觀日下之事、見疾趨者未必先至、有力者未必得勝、智者未必得食、哲者未必得財、有識者未必蒙恩、凡眾所遇、或隨時會、或屬偶然、

I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.

Here’s something else I’ve seen on this earth. Races aren’t always won by those who run fast. Battles aren’t always won by those who are strong. Wise people don’t always have plenty of food. Clever people aren’t always wealthy. Those who have learned a lot aren’t always successful. God controls the timing of every event. He also controls how things turn out.

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.

I have observed something else under the sun. The fastest runner doesn’t always win the race, and the strongest warrior doesn’t always win the battle. The wise sometimes go hungry, and the skillful are not necessarily wealthy. And those who are educated don’t always lead successful lives. It is all decided by chance, by being in the right place at the right time.

Again I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, or the battle to the strong, or bread to the wise, or riches to the discerning, or favor to the skillful; rather, time and chance happen to all of them.

This is what the Lord says:“ Let no wise man boast of his wisdom, nor let the mighty man boast of his might, nor a rich man boast of his riches;

There is no wisdom, no understanding, And no plan against the Lord.The horse is prepared for the day of battle, But the victory belongs to the Lord.

Who is there who speaks and it comes to pass, Unless the Lord has commanded it?Is it not from the mouth of the Most High That both adversity and good proceed?

So that He sets on high those who are lowly, And those who mourn are lifted to safety.He frustrates the schemes of the shrewd, So that their hands cannot attain success.He captures the wise by their own cleverness, And the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted.By day they meet with darkness, And grope at noon as in the night.

Refuge will be lost from the swift, And the strong will not strengthen his power, Nor the warrior save his life.The one who grasps the bow will not stand his ground, The swift of foot will not escape, Nor will the one who rides the horse save his life.Even the bravest among the warriors will flee naked on that day,” declares the Lord.

I said to myself,“ God will judge the righteous and the wicked,” for a time for every matter and for every deed is there.

and he said,“ Listen, all you of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and King Jehoshaphat: This is what the Lord says to you:‘ Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s.

I know that everything God does will remain forever; there is nothing to add to it and there is nothing to take from it. And God has so worked, that people will fear Him.

Let not the swift man flee, Nor the warrior escape. In the north beside the river Euphrates They have stumbled and fallen.

The king is not saved by a mighty army; A warrior is not rescued by great strength.A horse is a false hope for victory; Nor does it rescue anyone by its great strength.

He does not delight in the strength of the horse; He does not take pleasure in the legs of a man.The Lord favors those who fear Him, Those who wait for His faithfulness.

The wise person’s eyes are in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I know that one and the same fate happens to both of them.Then I said to myself,“ As is the fate of the fool, it will also happen to me. Why then have I been extremely wise?” So I said to myself,“ This too is futility.”

I have seen that every labor and every skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a person and his neighbor. This too is futility and striving after wind.

Now when Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out and went to his home, to his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; so he died and was buried in his father’s grave.

Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said,“ The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than the advice of Ahithophel.” For the Lord had ordained to foil the good advice of Ahithophel, in order for the Lord to bring disaster on Absalom.

Then I looked again at all the acts of oppression which were being done under the sun. And behold, I saw the tears of the oppressed and that they had no one to comfort them; and power was on the side of their oppressors, but they had no one to comfort them.

So I turned to consider wisdom, insanity, and foolishness; for what will the man do who will come after the king, except what has already been done?

Do not go on boasting so very proudly, Do not let arrogance come out of your mouth; For the Lord is a God of knowledge, And with Him actions are weighed.The bows of the mighty are broken to pieces, But those who have stumbled strap on strength.Those who were full hire themselves out for bread, But those who were hungry cease to be hungry. Even the infertile woman gives birth to seven, But she who has many children languishes.The Lord puts to death and makes alive; He brings down to Sheol and brings up.The Lord makes poor and rich; He humbles, He also exalts.He raises the poor from the dust, He lifts the needy from the garbage heap To seat them with nobles, And He gives them a seat of honor as an inheritance; For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, And He set the world on them.He watches over the feet of His godly ones, But the wicked ones are silenced in darkness; For not by might shall a person prevail.Those who contend with the Lord will be terrified; Against them He will thunder in the heavens, The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; And He will give strength to His king, And will exalt the horn of His anointed.”

In Him we also have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things in accordance with the plan of His will,

Therefore arrogance is their necklace; The garment of violence covers them.Their eye bulges from fatness; The imaginations of their heart overflow.

But you are to remember the Lord your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, in order to confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Consider the work of God, For who is able to straighten what He has bent?

So you will again distinguish between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him.

When He keeps quiet, who can condemn? And when He hides His face, who then can look at Him, That is, regarding both nation and a person?—

All the inhabitants of the earth are of no account, But He does according to His will among the army of heaven And among the inhabitants of earth; And no one can fend off His hand Or say to Him,‘ What have You done?’

Now the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel; and Asahel was as swift footed as one of the gazelles that is in the field.Asahel pursued Abner and did not turn to the right or to the left from following Abner.Then Abner looked behind himself and said,“ Is that you, Asahel?” And he said,“ It is I!”So Abner said to him,“ Turn aside for your own good to your right or to your left, and take hold of one of the young men for yourself, and take for yourself his equipment.” But Asahel was unwilling to turn aside from following him.Then Abner repeated again to Asahel,“ Turn aside for your own good from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I show my face to your brother Joab?”However, he refused to turn aside; so Abner struck him in the belly with the butt end of the spear, so that the spear came out at his back. And he fell there and died on the spot. And it happened that all who came thereafter to the place where Asahel had fallen and died, stood still.

So David prevailed over the Philistine with the sling and the stone: he struck the Philistine and killed him, and there was no sword in David’s hand.
