有人天主賜之貲財產業尊榮、心之所欲、毫無所缺、惟天主不使之能享、他人享之、此亦屬於虛、實為大患、

God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them, and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil.

耶和華啊，求你伸手救我脫離這些人，脫離這些只在今生有福分的世人。你使他們財寶無數。他們兒女眾多，還把財富留給子孫。

你沒有求富貴和尊榮，但我會一併賜給你，使你有生之年在列王中無人能比。

他們胖得眼睛凸出，心中充滿罪惡。

他們家中平安無懼，他們不被上帝杖打。他們的公牛繁殖力強，他們的母牛從不掉胎。他們讓孩童像羊群一樣走到戶外，盡情地歡跳。他們伴著鈴鼓和豎琴歌唱，在笛聲中歡喜不已。他們一生幸福，安然下到陰間。他們對上帝說，『離開我們，我們不想學習你的道。全能者是誰，竟要我們事奉祂？向祂禱告有何益處？』

那時，我就可以對自己說，「你積存這麼多財產，一生享用不盡，現在大可高枕無憂、盡情地吃喝玩樂吧！」』但上帝對他說，『無知的人啊！今晚就要取走你的命！你所預備的一切留給誰享用呢？』」

有一個人孤孤單單，沒有兒子也沒有兄弟，卻終身勞碌。他雖然家道豐裕，仍不滿足，從未想過「我不停地勞碌，放棄一切享受，究竟是為了誰？」這也是虛空，是一種悲哀。

上帝對所羅門說：「你既然有此心願，不為自己求富貴、資財、尊榮、長壽，也沒有求滅絕你的敵人，只求智慧和知識以治理我的子民——我交在你王權之下的百姓，

「與你們素不相識的民族必吃光你們土地的出產和勞碌所得，你們必常受欺壓，

這是多麼可悲啊！人怎樣來，也要怎樣去，為風勞碌有什麼益處呢？

我們的土地被陌生人侵佔，我們的房屋落入外族人手中。

我又看見人的一切勞碌和成就原是出於爭強好勝。這也是虛空，如同捕風。

王啊，至高的上帝曾將國位、權力、尊榮、威嚴賜給你的先王尼布甲尼撒，

「你們中間的外族人要日益興旺，你們卻要日漸衰微。

你們到了那裡，會看見當地的居民毫無防範，那裡地大物博，一無所缺。上帝已經把那地方賜給我們了。」

大衛年紀老邁，享盡富貴尊榮後，壽終正寢。他兒子所羅門繼位。

外族人耗盡了他的力量，他卻茫然不知。他頭髮斑白，卻渾然不覺。

我大動工程，為自己建造房屋，栽種葡萄園，開墾花圃園囿，種植各種果樹，開鑿池塘，澆灌茂林。我買了僕婢，又有生在家中的僕婢，擁有的牛羊遠超過有史以來耶路撒冷的任何人。我為自己積聚金銀，搜羅列王和各省的奇珍異寶，得到男女歌優及許多妃嬪——都是世人所想望的。這樣，我便財勢日增，享譽盛名，超過耶路撒冷歷來所有的人。然而，我仍然保持智慧。凡我眼睛愛看的、心裡渴慕的，我都隨心所欲，盡情享受。我的心從勞碌中得到歡樂，這是我勞碌所得的回報。

因為祂要帶你們到一個佳美之地。那裡的谷中和山間流淌著條條溪流、股股清泉；那裡盛產大麥、小麥、葡萄、無花果、石榴、橄欖油和蜂蜜；那裡食物充足，一無所缺；那裡礦產資源豐富，石頭就是鐵，山中可以採銅。你們吃飽喝足後，要讚美你們的上帝耶和華，因為祂賜給你們那佳美之地。

人生不過是幻影，勞碌奔波卻一場空，積蓄財富卻不知誰來享用。

耶和華使所羅門倍受以色列人尊崇，賜他君王的威嚴，超過在他之前的所有以色列王。
