And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

I also saw that a person works hard and accomplishes a lot. But they do it only because they want what another person has. That doesn’t have any meaning either. It’s like chasing the wind.

Then I saw that all toil and all skill in work come from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

I saw that all labor and all skillful work is due to one person’s jealousy of another. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

I have seen that every labor and every skill which is done is the result of rivalry between a person and his neighbor. This too is futility and striving after wind.

Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all[ is] vanity and vexation of spirit.

For there is a man whose labour[ is] in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it[ for] his portion. This also[ is] vanity and a great evil.

Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what[ is] man the better?

[ There is] no end of all the people,[ even] of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also[ is] vanity and vexation of spirit.

And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.And he told[ it] to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What[ is] this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.

And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth,[ that] David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

Wrath[ is] cruel, and anger[ is] outrageous; but who[ is] able to stand before envy?

For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
