There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

At first, all the people served him when he became king. But those who came later weren’t pleased with the way he was ruling. That doesn’t have any meaning either. It’s like chasing the wind.

There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

在以色列眾族派中人民都紛紛爭論說：『王曾援救了我們脫離仇敵的手掌，他曾搭救了我們脫離非利士人的手掌；現在他竟躲避押沙龍、離開此地逃走了。

就在那裏、以色列人便在大衛的僕人面前被擊敗了；那一天被擊殺的、數目很大：共有二萬。戰事在那裏蔓延到全地帶；那一天森林所消滅的兵眾比刀劍所消滅的更多。

押沙龍獻祭的時候、打發人去將大衛的參謀基羅人亞希多弗從他本城基羅請了來。於是謀叛的派勢強大起來；隨從押沙龍的人民也越來越多。有一個報信的人來見大衛說：『以色列的人心都歸向押沙龍了。』

那時哈及的兒子亞多尼雅高抬自己、說：『我要做王』；就為自己豫備車輛、駿馬、和五十個人在他前面奔走。他父親從來沒有使他難過，沒有問過他說：『你為甚麼這樣作？』他丰姿非常俊美；是在押沙龍之後生的。亞多尼雅同洗魯雅的兒子約押、和祭司亞比亞他商議；二人附從亞多尼雅，幫助他。

誰使上帝喜悅，上帝就給誰智慧、知識、和喜樂；惟有罪人、上帝卻給他勞苦，叫他將所收聚所積蓄的歸給那使上帝所喜悅的人：這也是虛空，也是捕風。

我再說，你們今日若按忠誠正直待耶路巴力和他的家，你們就可以因亞比米勒而得喜樂，亞比米勒也可以因你們而得喜樂；不然，就願火從亞比米勒發出，來燒滅示劍公民和米羅的家；又願火從示劍公民和米羅的家發出，去燒滅亞比米勒。』

那些跟他一齊長大的少年人對他說：『這人民對王說：「你父親使我們負的軛很重，你呢，你使我們輕鬆些吧」：王要對他們這麼說：「我的小拇指比我父親的腰還粗呢。我父親將負的軛給你們馱上，現在呢、我要加重你們的軛呢；我父親用鞭子責打你們，我卻要用蠍子鞭責打你們呢。」』眾民照羅波安王所說『你們第三天再來見我』的那話、第三天果然來見羅波安了。羅波安王很嚴厲地回答眾民：他棄絕了老年人給他出的主意，反而照少年人出的主意對眾民說：『我父親使你們負的軛很重，我卻要加重你們的軛呢；我父親用鞭子責打你們，我卻要用蠍子鞭責打你們呢。』王不聽眾民的要求，這一個事態是出於永恆主，為要實行他的話、就是由示羅人亞希雅經手論到尼八兒子耶羅波安所說過的。以色列眾民見王不聽他們的要求，就回答王說：『我們在大衛上有甚麼分兒呢？我們在耶西的兒子上並沒有業分呀。以色列人哪，回家去吧！大衛啊，現在只顧自己的家吧。』於是以色列人都回家去。

眾民跟隨他上來，一直吹笛，大大歡喜；地都因他們的聲音而震裂了！
