There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

At first, all the people served him when he became king. But those who came later weren’t pleased with the way he was ruling. That doesn’t have any meaning either. It’s like chasing the wind.

There was no end of all the people, all of whom he led. Yet those who come later will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and a striving after wind.

押沙龍獻祭的時候，還派人去把大衛的謀士亞希多弗從他的故鄉基羅請來。反叛的勢力大增，擁護押沙龍的民眾越來越多。有人來稟告大衛：「以色列的民心都歸向押沙龍了。」

那時，哈姬的兒子亞多尼雅妄自尊大，說：「我必做王。」他為自己製備了車輛和騎兵，派五十人在前面開路。他父親從不干涉、責問他：「你這是做什麼？」他是押沙龍的弟弟，長得英俊非凡。亞多尼雅與洗魯雅的兒子約押及祭司亞比亞他商議，二人都答應支持他。

上帝把智慧、知識和喜樂賜給祂喜悅的人，卻讓罪人忙於積攢財富，然後把他們的財富賜給祂喜悅的人。這也是虛空，也是捕風。

倘若你們光明正大地對待了耶路·巴力一家，願你們給亞比米勒帶來快樂，也願亞比米勒給你們帶來快樂。否則，願亞比米勒燒滅你們示劍人和米羅人，也願你們示劍人和米羅人燒滅亞比米勒。」

他們說：「民眾說你父親使他們負擔沉重，請求你減輕他們的負擔。你可以這樣回覆他們，『我的小指頭比我父親的腰還粗。我父親使你們負重擔，我要使你們負更重的擔子；我父親用鞭子打你們，我要用刺鞭打你們。』」過了三天，耶羅波安和民眾遵照羅波安王的話來見他。王沒有採納老臣的建議，而是照青年臣僚的建議，疾言厲色地對他們說：「我父親使你們負重擔，我要使你們負更重的擔子！我父親用鞭子打你們，我要用刺鞭打你們！」

眾人浩浩蕩蕩地隨著所羅門回京，一路上吹笛歡呼，聲音震動大地。
