I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned.

I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.

I hated everything I had worked for on earth. I’ll have to leave all of it to someone who lives after me.

I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me,

I hated all my work that I labored at under the sun because I must leave it to the one who comes after me.

So I hated all the fruit of my labor for which I had labored under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.

Then I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.

And I hated all my labor wherein I labored under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

So I loathed all the fruit of my effort, for which I worked so hard on earth, because I must leave it behind in the hands of my successor.

We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it.

Those who are wise must finally die, just like the foolish and senseless, leaving all their wealth behind.

Because of God’s grace to me, I have laid the foundation like an expert builder. Now others are building on it. But whoever is building on this foundation must be very careful.

“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’

So now the Lord said to him,“ Since you have not kept my covenant and have disobeyed my decrees, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your servants.But for the sake of your father, David, I will not do this while you are still alive. I will take the kingdom away from your son.And even so, I will not take away the entire kingdom; I will let him be king of one tribe, for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, my chosen city.”

But most fortunate of all are those who are not yet born. For they have not seen all the evil that is done under the sun.

I also tried to find meaning by building huge homes for myself and by planting beautiful vineyards.I made gardens and parks, filling them with all kinds of fruit trees.I built reservoirs to collect the water to irrigate my many flourishing groves.I bought slaves, both men and women, and others were born into my household. I also owned large herds and flocks, more than any of the kings who had lived in Jerusalem before me.I collected great sums of silver and gold, the treasure of many kings and provinces. I hired wonderful singers, both men and women, and had many beautiful concubines. I had everything a man could desire!So I became greater than all who had lived in Jerusalem before me, and my wisdom never failed me.

What do people get for all their hard work under the sun?

There is another serious problem I have seen under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.Money is put into risky investments that turn sour, and everything is lost. In the end, there is nothing left to pass on to one’s children.

I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock.Even some men from your own group will rise up and distort the truth in order to draw a following.

God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy to those who please him. But if a sinner becomes wealthy, God takes the wealth away and gives it to those who please him. This, too, is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life.

Live happily with the woman you love through all the meaningless days of life that God has given you under the sun. The wife God gives you is your reward for all your earthly toil.

“ Then the rich man said,‘ Please, Father Abraham, at least send him to my father’s home.For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don’t end up in this place of torment.’

By the power of your hand, O Lord, destroy those who look to this world for their reward. But satisfy the hunger of your treasured ones. May their children have plenty, leaving an inheritance for their descendants.

I devoted myself to search for understanding and to explore by wisdom everything being done under heaven. I soon discovered that God has dealt a tragic existence to the human race.
