I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.

I hated everything I had worked for on earth. I’ll have to leave all of it to someone who lives after me.

I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned.

I hated all my work that I labored at under the sun because I must leave it to the one who comes after me.

So I hated all the fruit of my labor for which I had labored under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.

Surely a man goes about as a shadow! Surely for nothing they are in turmoil; man heaps up wealth and does not know who will gather!

For he sees that even the wise die; the fool and the stupid alike must perish and leave their wealth to others.

According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it.

But God said to him,‘ Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’

Therefore the Lord said to Solomon,“ Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant.Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your days, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.However, I will not tear away all the kingdom, but I will give one tribe to your son, for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem that I have chosen.”

But better than both is he who has not yet been and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.

I made great works. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself.I made myself gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees.I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees.I bought male and female slaves, and had slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem.I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man.So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me.

What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?

There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt,and those riches were lost in a bad venture. And he is father of a son, but he has nothing in his hand.

I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them.

For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.

Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot.

Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that he has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life and in your toil at which you toil under the sun.

And he said,‘ Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house—for I have five brothers— so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’

from men by your hand, O Lord, from men of the world whose portion is in this life. You fill their womb with treasure; they are satisfied with children, and they leave their abundance to their infants.

And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.
