斯世所為、殷憂慼慼、莫非捕風捉影、故我不樂其生。

我厭惡生命、因我見日下所作之事、皆不善、皆屬於虛、皆如捕風、

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

So I hated life. That’s because the work done on this earth made me sad. None of it has any meaning. It’s like chasing the wind.

So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

Therefore, I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

後來我察看我的手所作的一切事、和我勞碌去作的工；嗐！都是虛空！都是捕風！在日光之下毫無益處。

現在呢、永恆主啊，把我的性命取去吧！因為我死了比活着還好。』

日出時，上帝又安排了炎熱的東風，日頭曬了約拿的頭，以致他暈過去，他就為自己求死，說：『我死了比活着還好。』

以致我寧肯噎死，寧肯死亡，勝似留我這一身骨頭。我厭棄性命；我不願永遠活着；不要管我；因為我的日子都是虛幻。

我見過日光之下所發生過的一切事；啊，都是虛空！都是捕風！

『巴不得你將我珍藏於陰間吧！將我隱藏，等你怒氣轉消吧！願你為我定了期限，並懷念着我。

故此我祝賀那已死了的死人，勝過那還活着的活人；

眼睛看到的比心裏轉來轉去想的好：這也是虛空，也是捕風。

你為甚麼使我看見奸惡？為甚麼你逕看着毒害事而不理呢？毁滅和強暴老在我面前，紛爭與相鬥又時時發生呢！

人從他一切的勞碌和操心，就是他在日光之下所勞碌的，得了甚麼呢？

我被困迫於兩難之間，一方面切願着撤離世間、去和基督同在，那更好得多；不過仍然住在肉身裏呢，為着你們的緣故倒更必須。我既然這樣深信，就知道還要存活，並且要和你們眾人一同存活，使你們得到信仰上的進步和喜樂，

你既這樣待我，我若在你面前蒙恩，求你乾脆將我殺掉，免得我見自己的苦處。』

願我生的那一日受咒詛！願我母親生了我的那一天不蒙祝福！那給我父親報消息說：『有男孩給你生下來了！』使我父親歡喜快樂的，願那人受咒詛！願那人像永恆主所傾覆的城，而永恆主並不改變心意的；願他早晨聽見哀呼聲，而中午時分又聽見吶喊；因為永恆主不使我死於母胎，好讓我母親做我的墳墓，而母胎永遠懷着。我為甚麼出母胎而見勞碌辛苦，以致我的年日都消耗於失望中呢？

於是靈將我舉起，帶我而去；我很苦惱，帶着心靈上的激熱而去；永恆主的手大有力量地按在我身上。

我又看日光之下甚麼地方在執行着公道，甚麼地方就有奸惡，甚麼地方有公義，甚麼地方也有奸惡。

主啊，求你記得人的一生是怎麼樣；你創造全人類使他們何等的虛空！（細拉）

『為甚麼有光賜給受苦難的人？而有生命給心裏愁苦的人呢？為甚麼給切望着「死」而不得死的人？給挖地尋「死」、勝於尋求藏寶的人呢？給尋見墳墓就歡喜、而快樂高興的人呢？

自己卻進曠野、走了一天的路程，來到一棵羅騰樹下，就坐在那裏為自己求死，說：『罷了！永恆主啊，現在取我的性命吧！因為我並不比我列祖強。』
