Therefore, I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

我遂惡生、因於日下經營、乃為煩惱、悉屬虛空、莫非捕風、

斯世所為、殷憂慼慼、莫非捕風捉影、故我不樂其生。

我厭惡生命、因我見日下所作之事、皆不善、皆屬於虛、皆如捕風、

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

So I hated life. That’s because the work done on this earth made me sad. None of it has any meaning. It’s like chasing the wind.

So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

So I loathed life because what happens on earth seems awful to me; for all the benefits of wisdom are futile– like chasing the wind.

When I considered all that I had accomplished and what I had labored to achieve, I found everything to be futile and a pursuit of the wind. There was nothing to be gained under the sun.

And now, Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

As the sun was rising, God appointed a scorching east wind. The sun beat down so much on Jonah’s head that he almost fainted, and he wanted to die. He said,“ It’s better for me to die than to live.”

so that I prefer strangling— death rather than life in this body.I give up! I will not live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are a breath.

I have seen all the things that are done under the sun and have found everything to be futile, a pursuit of the wind.

If only You would hide me in Sheol and conceal me until Your anger passes. If only You would appoint a time for me and then remember me.

So I admired the dead, who have already died, more than the living, who are still alive.

Better what the eyes see than wandering desire. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

Why do You force me to look at injustice? Why do You tolerate wrongdoing? Oppression and violence are right in front of me. Strife is ongoing, and conflict escalates.

For what does a man get with all his work and all his efforts that he labors at under the sun?

I am pressured by both. I have the desire to depart and be with Christ— which is far better—but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you.Since I am persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,

If You are going to treat me like this, please kill me right now. If You are pleased with me, don’t let me see my misery anymore.”

May the day I was born be cursed. May the day my mother bore me never be blessed.May the man be cursed who brought the news to my father, saying,“ A male child is born to you,” bringing him great joy.Let that man be like the cities the Lord demolished without compassion. Let him hear an outcry in the morning and a war cry at noontimebecause he didn’t kill me in the womb so that my mother might have been my grave, her womb eternally pregnant.Why did I come out of the womb to see only struggle and sorrow, to end my life in shame?

So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away. I left in bitterness and in an angry spirit, and the Lord’s hand was on me powerfully.

I also observed under the sun: there is wickedness at the place of judgment and there is wickedness at the place of righteousness.

Remember how short my life is. Have You created everyone for nothing?

Why is light given to one burdened with grief, and life to those whose existence is bitter,who wait for death, but it does not come, and search for it more than for hidden treasure,who are filled with much joy and are glad when they reach the grave?

but he went on a day’s journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a broom tree and prayed that he might die. He said,“ I have had enough! Lord, take my life, for I’m no better than my fathers.”
