So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

So I hated life. That’s because the work done on this earth made me sad. None of it has any meaning. It’s like chasing the wind.

So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling. Everything is meaningless— like chasing the wind.

Therefore, I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

我觀我手所作諸工、及勞力之操作、乃知悉屬虛空、莫非捕風、於日下無所裨益、○

耶和華歟、今求爾索我命、以我之死、猶愈於生、

日出時、上帝備東風、其氣炎酷、日暴約拿之首、使之昏迷、則求死曰、我之死、猶愈於生焉、

甚至我魂寧願氣閉死亡、愈於寄此骸骨、我厭生命、不欲久存、我日空虛、願勿顧我、

我見日下所為之事、悉屬虛空、莫非捕風、

願爾藏我於陰府、匿我於隱處、俟爾怒息、為我定期、而記念我、

故我稱已死者、甚於尚生之人、

目之睹、勝於欲之縱、斯亦虛空、乃為捕風、○

胡為使我見奸惡、爾奚觀橫逆乎、殘賊強暴、在於我前、怨隙爭鬥、紛然並起、

人於日下身勞心煩、何所得耶、

蓋我迫於二者之間、欲歸與基督偕在、是為愈美、但居於形軀、為爾之故為尤要、既深信此、則知我必仍存、且與爾眾同居、致爾進益而樂於道、

如蒙爾恩、與其待我若此、毋寧殺我、免我遭諸困苦、○

願我生辰受詛、我母產我之日不受祝、傳信於我父曰、汝生男子、使之極樂、願其人受詛、願其人若古邑、為耶和華傾覆而不悔、願彼清晨聞哀號、亭午聞警報、因其未戮我於母胎、使母為我墓、其胎恆大、我何為出胎、受苦罹憂、畢生蒙恥、

神舉我、攜我而往、我意惻怛、中心激烈、大受耶和華之感、

我觀日下、公庭有不公、義所有不義、

願爾垂念、我之時日、何其短促、爾造世人、使之何其虛幻兮、

胡為賜光於受難者、賜生於苦心者、彼望死不得、掘地求之、甚於求寶藏、尋獲塚墓、則喜樂不勝、

獨行曠野一日之程、坐於羅騰樹下、祈死曰、耶和華歟、已矣、望取我命、蓋我不愈於我列祖也、
