There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them. Even the ones who will come later will not be happy with him; for this too is futility and striving after wind.

For to a person who is good in His sight, He has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, while to the sinner He has given the task of gathering and collecting so that he may give to one who is good in God’s sight. This too is futility and striving after wind.

Then the king said to the servants,‘ Tie his hands and feet, and throw him into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in that place.’

He is driven from light into darkness, And chased from the inhabited world.

Although a sinner does evil a hundred times and may lengthen his life, still I know that it will go well for those who fear God, who fear Him openly.

As he came naked from his mother’s womb, so he will return as he came. He will take nothing from the fruit of his labor that he can carry in his hand.This also is a sickening evil: exactly as a person is born, so will he die. What then is the advantage for him who labors for the wind?

On the day of prosperity be happy, But on the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other So that a person will not discover anything that will come after him.

But a man dies and lies prostrate. A person passes away, and where is he?

And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the fruit of my labor for which I have labored by acting wisely under the sun. This too is futility.

When there is a person who has labored with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and then gives his legacy to one who has not labored for it; this too is futility and a great evil.For what does a person get in all his labor and in his striving with which he labors under the sun?Because all his days his activity is painful and irritating; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is futility.

There was a man without a dependent, having neither a son nor a brother, yet there was no end to all his labor. Indeed, his eyes were not satisfied with riches, and he never asked,“ And for whom do I labor and deprive myself of pleasure?” This too is futility, and it is an unhappy task.

For there are many words which increase futility. What then is the advantage to a person?

I said to myself,“ Come now, I will test you with pleasure. So enjoy yourself.” And behold, it too was futility.I said of laughter,“ It is senseless,” and of pleasure,“ What does this accomplish?”I explored with my mind how to refresh my body with wine while my mind was guiding me wisely; and how to seize foolishness, until I could see what good there is for the sons of mankind to do under heaven for the few years of their lives.I enlarged my works: I built houses for myself, I planted vineyards for myself;I made gardens and parks for myself, and I planted in them all kinds of fruit trees;I made ponds of water for myself from which to irrigate a forest of growing trees.I bought male and female slaves, and I had slaves born at home. I also possessed flocks and herds larger than all who preceded me in Jerusalem.I also amassed for myself silver and gold, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I provided for myself male and female singers, and the pleasures of the sons of mankind: many concubines.Then I became great and increased more than all who preceded me in Jerusalem. My wisdom also stood by me.All that my eyes desired, I did not refuse them. I did not restrain my heart from any pleasure, for my heart was pleased because of all my labor; and this was my reward for all my labor.So I considered all my activities which my hands had done and the labor which I had exerted, and behold, all was futility and striving after wind, and there was no benefit under the sun.

Give glory to the Lord your God Before He brings darkness And before your feet stumble On the mountains in the dark, And while you are hoping for light He makes it into gloom, And turns it into thick darkness.

He wanders about for food, saying,‘ Where is it?’ He knows that a day of darkness is at hand.

So Jesus said to them,“ For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness. As dawn is spread over the mountains, So there is a great and mighty people; There has never been anything like it, Nor will there be again after it To the years of many generations.

Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years approach when you will say,“ I have no pleasure in them”;before the sun and the light, the moon and the stars are darkened, and clouds return after the rain;on the day that the watchmen of the house tremble, and strong men are bent over, the grinders stop working because they are few, and those who look through windows grow dim;and the doors on the street are shut as the sound of the grinding mill is low, and one will arise at the sound of the bird, and all the daughters of song will sing softly.Furthermore, people are afraid of a high place and of terrors on the road; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along, and the caper berry is ineffective. For man goes to his eternal home while the mourners move around in the street.

I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in one’s lifetime;moreover, that every person who eats and drinks sees good in all his labor— this is the gift of God.

that they were saying to you,“ In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.”

So I hated life, for the work which had been done under the sun was unhappy to me; because everything is futility and striving after wind.

Then I said to myself,“ As is the fate of the fool, it will also happen to me. Why then have I been extremely wise?” So I said to myself,“ This too is futility.”

Even if the man lives a thousand years twice, but does not see good things— do not all go to one and the same place?”

So I commended pleasure, for there is nothing good for a person under the sun except to eat, drink, and be joyful, and this will stand by him in his labor throughout the days of his life which God has given him under the sun.
