Or has he given us any gift?”And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said,“ We have ten shares in the king; therefore we also have more right to David than you. Why then do you despise us— were we not the first to advise bringing back our king?” Yet the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.And there happened to be there a rebel, whose name was Sheba the son of Bichri, a Benjamite. And he blew a trumpet, and said:“ We have no share in David, Nor do we have inheritance in the son of Jesse; Every man to his tents, O Israel!”

But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

then Saul said to his servants who stood about him,“ Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds?All of you have conspired against me, and there is no one who reveals to me that my son has made a covenant with the son of Jesse; and there is not one of you who is sorry for me or reveals to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as it is this day.”

saying,“ Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!”But Peter and the other apostles answered and said:“ We ought to obey God rather than men.The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree.Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.”When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them.

And he said,“ If the Lord does not help you, where can I find help for you? From the threshing floor or from the winepress?”

And the king said,“ You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father’s house!”Then the king said to the guards who stood about him,“ Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled and did not tell it to me.” But the servants of the king would not lift their hands to strike the priests of the Lord.And the king said to Doeg,“ You turn and kill the priests!” So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck the priests, and killed on that day eighty-five men who wore a linen ephod.

Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen( Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen.And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke.Then they secretly induced men to say,“ We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”

And some of the Pharisees said to them,“ Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”

When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner.

Nevertheless Saul did not say anything that day, for he thought,“ Something has happened to him; he is unclean, surely he is unclean.”And it happened the next day, the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son,“ Why has the son of Jesse not come to eat, either yesterday or today?”So Jonathan answered Saul,“ David earnestly asked permission of me to go to Bethlehem.And he said,‘ Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. And now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me get away and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come to the king’s table.”Then Saul’s anger was aroused against Jonathan, and he said to him,“ You son of a perverse, rebellious woman! Do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, you shall not be established, nor your kingdom. Now therefore, send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.”And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him,“ Why should he be killed? What has he done?”Then Saul cast a spear at him to kill him, by which Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to kill David.

But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also,

Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.

If a wise man contends with a foolish man, Whether the fool rages or laughs, there is no peace.

And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things,lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, that they might accuse Him.

But it came to pass on the seventh day that they said to Samson’s wife,“ Entice your husband, that he may explain the riddle to us, or else we will burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you invited us in order to take what is ours? Is that not so?”

Then he said,“ God do so to me and more also, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat remains on him today!”

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Diana, brought no small profit to the craftsmen.He called them together with the workers of similar occupation, and said:“ Men, you know that we have our prosperity by this trade.Moreover you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but throughout almost all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are not gods which are made with hands.So not only is this trade of ours in danger of falling into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Diana may be despised and her magnificence destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worship.”Now when they heard this, they were full of wrath and cried out, saying,“ Great is Diana of the Ephesians!”

When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,and said,“ Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord;and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying,“ Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”
