“ Remember and do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God in the wilderness. You have been rebelling against the LORD from the day you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place.

Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord.

Here is something you must remember. Never forget it. You made the Lord your God angry in the desert. You refused to obey him from the day you left Egypt until you arrived here.

Remember and do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.

“ Remember and never forget how angry you made the Lord your God out in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until now, you have been constantly rebelling against him.

Remember, do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to anger in the wilderness; from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you arrived at this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.

“ Remember! Do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you departed from the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against the Lord.

Remember, forget thou not, how thou provokedst Jehovah thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou wentest forth out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against Jehovah.

“ Remember and do not forget how you provoked the Lord your God in the wilderness. You have been rebelling against the Lord from the day you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place.

Remember,[ and] forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD.

Remember– don’t ever forget– how you provoked the LORD your God in the desert; from the time you left the land of Egypt until you came to this place you were constantly rebelling against him.

Remember, and don’t forget, how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness. From the day that you left the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh.

They said to Moses,“ Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt?

The people spoke against God and Moses:“ Why have you led us up from Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread or water, and we detest this wretched food!”

The riffraff among them had a strong craving for other food. The Israelites wept again and said,“ Who will feed us meat?

The entire Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

So the people complained to Moses,“ Give us water to drink.”“ Why are you complaining to me?” Moses replied to them.“ Why are you testing the LORD?”

The women invited them to the sacrifices for their gods, and the people ate and bowed in worship to their gods.

For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are rebelling against the LORD now, while I am still alive, how much more will you rebel after I am dead!

There was no water for the community, so they assembled against Moses and Aaron.The people quarreled with Moses and said,“ If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the LORD.Why have you brought the LORD’s assembly into this wilderness for us and our livestock to die here?Why have you led us up from Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It’s not a place of grain, figs, vines, and pomegranates, and there is no water to drink!”

“‘ You will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and detestable practices.

Then the whole community broke into loud cries, and the people wept that night.All the Israelites complained about Moses and Aaron, and the whole community told them,“ If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or if only we had died in this wilderness!Why is the LORD bringing us into this land to die by the sword? Our wives and children will become plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?”So they said to one another,“ Let’s appoint a leader and go back to Egypt.”Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole assembly of the Israelite community.Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who scouted out the land, tore their clothesand said to the entire Israelite community,“ The land we passed through and explored is an extremely good land.If the LORD is pleased with us, he will bring us into this land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and give it to us.Only don’t rebel against the LORD, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land, for we will devour them. Their protection has been removed from them, and the LORD is with us. Don’t be afraid of them!”While the whole community threatened to stone them, the glory of the LORD appeared to all the Israelites at the tent of meeting.

Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, tooktwo hundred fifty prominent Israelite men who were leaders of the community and representatives in the assembly, and they rebelled against Moses.They came together against Moses and Aaron and told them,“ You have gone too far! Everyone in the entire community is holy, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the LORD’s assembly?”When Moses heard this, he fell facedown.Then he said to Korah and all his followers,“ Tomorrow morning the LORD will reveal who belongs to him, who is set apart, and the one he will let come near him. He will let the one he chooses come near him.Korah, you and all your followers are to do this: take firepans, and tomorrowplace fire in them and put incense on them before the LORD. Then the man the LORD chooses will be the one who is set apart. It is you Levites who have gone too far!”Moses also told Korah,“ Now listen, Levites!Isn’t it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the Israelite community to bring you near to himself, to perform the work at the LORD’s tabernacle, and to stand before the community to minister to them?He has brought you near, and all your fellow Levites who are with you, but you are pursuing the priesthood as well.Therefore, it is you and all your followers who have conspired against the LORD! As for Aaron, who is he that you should complain about him?”Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said,“ We will not come!Is it not enough that you brought us up from a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? Do you also have to appoint yourself as ruler over us?Furthermore, you didn’t bring us to a land flowing with milk and honey or give us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? We will not come!”Then Moses became angry and said to the LORD,“ Don’t respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them or mistreated a single one of them.”So Moses told Korah,“ You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow— you, they, and Aaron.Each of you is to take his firepan, place incense on it, and present his firepan before the LORD— 250 firepans. You and Aaron are each to present your firepan also.”Each man took his firepan, placed fire in it, put incense on it, and stood at the entrance to the tent of meeting along with Moses and Aaron.After Korah assembled the whole community against them at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the whole community.The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron,“ Separate yourselves from this community so I may consume them instantly.”But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and said,“ God, God who gives breath to all, when one man sins, will you vent your wrath on the whole community?”The LORD replied to Moses,“ Tell the community: Get away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.He warned the community,“ Get away now from the tents of these wicked men. Don’t touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.”So they got away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Meanwhile, Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrance of their tents with their wives, children, and infants.Then Moses said,“ This is how you will know that the LORD sent me to do all these things and that it was not of my own will:If these men die naturally as all people would, and suffer the fate of all, then the LORD has not sent me.But if the LORD brings about something unprecedented, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them along with all that belongs to them so that they go down alive into Sheol, then you will know that these men have despised the LORD.”Just as he finished speaking all these words, the ground beneath them split open.The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, all Korah’s people, and all their possessions.They went down alive into Sheol with all that belonged to them. The earth closed over them, and they vanished from the assembly.At their cries, all the people of Israel who were around them fled because they thought,“ The earth may swallow us too!”Fire also came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were presenting the incense.

His people have acted corruptly toward him; this is their defect— they are not his children but a devious and crooked generation.Is this how you repay the LORD, you foolish and senseless people? Isn’t he your Father and Creator? Didn’t he make you and sustain you?

For I am the least of the apostles, not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed when you receive your older and younger sisters. I will give them to you as daughters, but not because of your covenant.I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD,so that when I make atonement for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed, and never open your mouth again because of your disgrace. This is the declaration of the Lord GOD.’”

Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on that day at Massah in the wildernesswhere your ancestors tested me; they tried me, though they had seen what I did.For forty years I was disgusted with that generation; I said,“ They are a people whose hearts go astray; they do not know my ways.”So I swore in my anger,“ They will not enter my rest.”

But our ancestors acted arrogantly; they became stiff-necked and did not listen to your commands.They refused to listen and did not remember your wonders you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love, and you did not abandon them.Even after they had cast an image of a calf for themselves and said,“ This is your god who brought you out of Egypt,” and they had committed terrible blasphemies,

even though I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an arrogant man. But I received mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief,and the grace of our Lord overflowed, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance:“ Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”— and I am the worst of them.

Then they would not be like their ancestors, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not loyal and whose spirit was not faithful to God.The Ephraimite archers turned back on the day of battle.They did not keep God’s covenant and refused to live by his law.They forgot what he had done, the wondrous works he had shown them.He worked wonders in the sight of their ancestors in the land of Egypt, the territory of Zoan.He split the sea and brought them across; the water stood firm like a wall.He led them with a cloud by day and with a fiery light throughout the night.He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink as abundant as the depths.He brought streams out of the stone and made water flow down like rivers.But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High.They deliberately tested God, demanding the food they craved.They spoke against God, saying,“ Is God able to provide food in the wilderness?Look! He struck the rock and water gushed out; torrents overflowed. But can he also provide bread or furnish meat for his people?”Therefore, the LORD heard and became furious; then fire broke out against Jacob, and anger flared up against Israelbecause they did not believe God or rely on his salvation.He gave a command to the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven.He rained manna for them to eat; he gave them grain from heaven.People ate the bread of angels. He sent them an abundant supply of food.He made the east wind blow in the skies and drove the south wind by his might.He rained meat on them like dust, and winged birds like the sand of the seas.He made them fall in the camp, all around the tents.The people ate and were completely satisfied, for he gave them what they craved.Before they had turned from what they craved, while the food was still in their mouths,God’s anger flared up against them, and he killed some of their best men. He struck down Israel’s fit young men.Despite all this, they kept sinning and did not believe his wondrous works.He made their days end in futility, their years in sudden disaster.When he killed some of them, the rest began to seek him; they repented and searched for God.They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their Redeemer.But they deceived him with their mouths, they lied to him with their tongues,their hearts were insincere toward him, and they were unfaithful to his covenant.Yet he was compassionate; he atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them. He often turned his anger aside and did not unleash all his wrath.He remembered that they were only flesh, a wind that passes and does not return.How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert.They constantly tested God and provoked the Holy One of Israel.They did not remember his power shown on the day he redeemed them from the foe,when he performed his miraculous signs in Egypt and his wonders in the territory of Zoan.He turned their rivers into blood, and they could not drink from their streams.He sent among them swarms of flies, which fed on them, and frogs, which devastated them.He gave their crops to the caterpillar and the fruit of their labor to the locust.He killed their vines with hail and their sycamore fig trees with a flood.He handed over their livestock to hail and their cattle to lightning bolts.He sent his burning anger against them: fury, indignation, and calamity— a band of deadly messengers.He cleared a path for his anger. He did not spare them from death but delivered their lives to the plague.He struck all the firstborn in Egypt, the first progeny of the tents of Ham.He led his people out like sheep and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.He led them safely, and they were not afraid; but the sea covered their enemies.He brought them to his holy territory, to the mountain his right hand acquired.He drove out nations before them. He apportioned their inheritance by lot and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.But they rebelliously tested the Most High God, for they did not keep his decrees.They treacherously turned away like their ancestors; they became warped like a faulty bow.They enraged him with their high places and provoked his jealousy with their carved images.God heard and became furious; he completely rejected Israel.He abandoned the tabernacle at Shiloh, the tent where he resided among mankind.He gave up his strength to captivity and his splendor to the hand of a foe.He surrendered his people to the sword because he was enraged with his heritage.Fire consumed his chosen young men, and his young women had no wedding songs.His priests fell by the sword, and the widows could not lament.The Lord awoke as if from sleep, like a warrior from the effects of wine.He beat back his foes; he gave them lasting disgrace.He rejected the tent of Joseph and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.He chose instead the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved.He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth that he established forever.He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens;he brought him from tending ewes to be shepherd over his people Jacob— over Israel, his inheritance.He shepherded them with a pure heart and guided them with his skillful hands.

There you will remember your ways and all your deeds by which you have defiled yourself, and you will loathe yourselves for all the evil things you have done.

So, then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh— called“ the uncircumcised” by those called“ the circumcised,” which is done in the flesh by human hands.

Remember that the LORD your God led you on the entire journey these forty years in the wilderness, so that he might humble you and test you to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.
