So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.

你們聽見有聲音從黑暗中發出、那時山上有火燒着，你們就走近我來，你們族派中所有的首領和你們的長老都來，

那時你們走近前來，站在山下；山上有火燒着，火燄沖到天中心，又有黑暗、密雲、暗霧。

因為你們上了的並不是一個可摸觸的山：那裏有燒𤏲的火、與昏黑幽冥和旋風、

摩西向天伸手杖，永恆主就打雷下冰雹；有火閃到地上：永恆主下冰雹在埃及地。

於是永恆主就改變心意不降災禍，就是他說、要向他人民施行的。摩西轉身、從山上下來，手裏拿着兩塊法版；版是兩面寫的：這面和那面都寫。版是上帝作的，字是上帝寫的，勒在版上。約書亞一聽見人民呼喊時候的聲音，就對摩西說：『營裏有爭戰的聲音哪！』摩西說：『這不是打勝仗呼應的聲音，也不是打敗仗呼應的聲音；我所聽見的乃是唱和的聲音。』摩西走近營前，一看見牛犢，以及人在舞蹈着，他的怒氣便發作，就把兩塊版從手中扔去，給摔碎在山下了。又拿他們所造的牛犢，用火去燒，磨得很細，撒在水面上，叫以色列人喝。摩西對亞倫說：『這人民向你作了甚麼，你竟使他們陷於大罪呀？』亞倫說：『求我主不要生氣；你認識這人民，知道他們是一味作壞事的。他們對我說：「給我們造神像、可以在我們前面引路的，因為那摩西、那領我們從埃及地上來的那個人、我們不知道他怎麼樣了。」我對他們說：「凡有金的要摘下來」；他們給了我，我把它扔在火中，這牛犢便出來了！』摩西看見人民放縱（是亞倫縱容他們，以致他們在那些起來反對他們、的人中間被訾議），摩西就站在營門中說：『誰屬永恆主的、都要到我這裏來』；於是利未的子孫都聚攏到他那裏。他對他們說：『永恆主以色列的上帝這麼說：「你們各人要把自己的刀佩在大腿邊，在營中來回地走，從這大門到那大門；各人要殺他的弟兄、他的同伴、和鄰近的人。」』利未人的子孫照摩西的話去行；那一天之內人民中倒斃的、約有三千人。摩西說：『今天你們授聖職與自己歸永恆主了，因為各人犧牲了自己的兒子或弟兄，好使今天有祝福給予你們。』第二天摩西對人民說：『你們真地犯了大罪了；如今我要上永恆主那裏去，或者可以為你們贖罪。』於是摩西回到永恆主那裏說：『唉，這人民真地犯了大罪，為自己造了金神像。如今，你若赦免他們的罪，就好啦；倘若不然，就求你從你所記的冊上把我塗抹掉吧。』永恆主對摩西說：『誰犯罪得罪了我，我就從我的冊上塗抹誰。如今你去領導這人民，往我所告訴你的地方去；看吧，我的使者必在你前面引路。不過在我鑒察的日子，我還是要向他們察罰他們的罪的。』永恆主擊殺了人民，是因為他們對亞倫造的牛犢所作的事的緣故。
