上帝啊，你在古日我們列祖的日子所顯的作為、我們列祖給我們敘述過的、我們都親耳聽見了。

是我們所聽過所知道的，我們祖宗對我們敘述過的。我們不將這些事向他們的子孫隱瞞；我們乃要將永恆主可頌可讚的事和他的能力、及他所行的奇妙作為、向後代的人敘說。

『你請查問前代，注意他們列祖所考察的；（因為我們只是昨日才有的，一無所知；因為我在世的日子只是個影兒。）他們豈不是指教你，告訴你，豈不是由心思發出話語來呢？

我思想着古時日子，想念到往古年代。我夜間捫心沉思；默默思想，心裏反覆探問：

『試問在你以前過去的日子，自從上帝創造人在地上以來，從天這邊到天那邊、何嘗有過以下這樣的大事呢？像這樣的事、又何曾有人聽見過呢？

於是他們想起往古之日，想起主的僕人摩西，說：那將人民、將看顧他全羣的牧人們從海裏領上來的、在哪裏呢？那將他的聖靈降在他們中間的、在哪裏呢？

你們要追念古時以來的往事；因為只有我是上帝，再沒有別的神；我是上帝，沒有誰像我一樣：

基甸對他說：『唉，我主啊，永恆主如果與我們同在，我們何至於遭遇這一切事呢？我們的祖宗向我們敘說的、永恆主一切奇妙的作為在哪裏呢？他們說：「永恆主豈不是領我們從埃及上來麼？」現在他卻丟棄了我們，將我們交在米甸人手掌中！』

日後你的兒子若問你說：「這是甚麼意思？」，你要對他說：「是永恆主用他手的權能將我們從埃及、從為奴之家領出來。

我懷念着你從古以來的典章，永恆主啊，我就得了安慰。

我要提說永恆主所行的；我要懷念你古時的奇事。我要沉思你一切所作的；你的大作為我要默想。

難道他的堅愛就永久止息，他的忠信就代代絕止？

他心裏說：『我必不動搖，必世世代代不遭患難。』
