王站在柱旁，在耶和華面前立約，要一心一意跟從耶和華，謹守他的誡命、典章和律例，實行這書上所寫有關這約的話。眾民都一同立約。

摩西上到神那裡去，耶和華從山上呼喚他，說：“你要這樣告訴雅各家，吩咐以色列人說：‘我向埃及人所行的，你們都看見了；也看見了我怎樣像鷹一樣把你們背在翅膀上，帶領你們到我這裡來。現在你們若是實在聽我的話，遵守我的約，你們就必在萬民中作屬我的產業，因為全地都是我的。

耶和華又對我說：“你要在猶大各城中和耶路撒冷的街道上，宣告這一切話，說：‘你們要聽從、遵行這約的話。

只有摩西一人可以走近耶和華，他們卻不可以親近；人民也不可和摩西一同上來。”摩西下來，把耶和華的一切話和一切典章都向人民講述；人民都同聲回答，說：“耶和華吩咐的一切話，我們都必遵行。”摩西把耶和華的一切話都記下了；清早起來，在山下築了一座祭壇，按著以色列十二支派立了十二根柱子。又派了以色列人中的青年人去獻燔祭，又向耶和華殺牛獻為平安祭。摩西取了一半的血，盛在盆中；又取了另一半的血，灑在祭壇上。他又把約書拿過來，念給人民聽；他們說：“耶和華吩咐的一切話，我們都必遵行和聽從。”摩西就取了血來，灑在人民的身上，說：“看哪，這是立約的血，這約是耶和華按著這一切話與你們立的。”

這新約不像從前我拉他們祖先的手，領他們出埃及地的日子，與他們所立的約；我雖然是他們的丈夫，他們卻違背了我的約。”這是耶和華的宣告。

“你要告訴猶大人和耶路撒冷的居民：‘你們要聽從這約的話。’

這新約不像從前我拉他們祖先的手，領他們出埃及的日子與他們所立的約。因為他們沒有遵守我的約，我就不理會他們。這是主說的。

你們是先知的子孫，也是承受神向你們祖先所立之約的人。神曾經對亞伯拉罕說：‘地上萬族，都要因你的後裔得福。’

人就必回答：‘是因為他們離棄了耶和華他們列祖的神的約，就是耶和華把他們從埃及地領出來的時候，與他們所立的；

為要叫你遵守耶和華你的神今日與你所立的約，和他向你所起的誓；

免得你忘了你在何烈山，站在耶和華你們的神面前的那天。那時耶和華對我說：‘你要為我召集眾民，我要叫他們聽我的話，使他們在那地上生活的日子，可以學習敬畏我，又可以教訓自己的兒女。’

你們要自己謹慎，免得你們忘記了耶和華你們的神與你們所立的約，你們就為自己製造偶像，製造任何神像的形象，就是耶和華你的神吩咐你不可作的。

把他的約，就是他吩咐你們遵守的那十條誡命（“十條誡命”直譯是“十句話”），向你們宣布出來；又把它們寫在兩塊石版上。
