Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations— as it is today.

But the Lord loved your people of long ago very much. You are their children. And he chose you above all the other nations. His love and his promise remain with you to this very day.

Yet the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day.

Yet the Lord chose your ancestors as the objects of his love. And he chose you, their descendants, above all other nations, as is evident today.

Yet the LORD had his heart set on your ancestors and loved them. He chose their descendants after them— he chose you out of all the peoples, as it is today.

因為祂愛你們的祖先，所以揀選你們，親自用大能把你們從埃及領出來，

如果耶和華喜悅我們，祂必把我們帶到那片土地，將那奶蜜之鄉賜給我們。

「耶和華喜愛你們、揀選你們，不是因為你們的人口比別的民族多——其實你們在萬族中是最小的——而是因為祂愛你們，遵守祂向你們祖先所起的誓。因此，祂用大能的手把你們從受奴役的地方領出來，從埃及王法老手中救贖了你們。

正如聖經上說：「我愛雅各，厭惡以掃。」這樣看來，我們該怎麼下結論呢？難道上帝不公平嗎？當然不是。祂曾對摩西說：「我要憐憫誰就憐憫誰，要恩待誰就恩待誰。」可見這並不在於人的意志和努力，而在於祂的憐憫。聖經記載著上帝對法老說的話：「我使你興起是為了在你身上彰顯我的權能，使我的名傳遍天下。」總之，上帝要憐憫誰，就憐憫誰；要叫誰頑固，就叫誰頑固。這樣，你肯定會對我說：「為什麼上帝還指責人呢？誰能抗拒祂的旨意呢？」你這個人啊！你是誰啊？竟敢頂撞上帝！受造之物怎能對造物主說：「你為什麼把我造成這樣？」陶匠難道不可以從一團泥中拿一部分造貴重的器皿，又拿一部分造平凡的器皿嗎？倘若上帝要顯示祂的烈怒和權能，就儘量容忍那些祂預備要毀滅的器皿，以便在那些祂憐憫並預備賜予榮耀的器皿上彰顯祂豐盛的榮耀，這難道不可以嗎？
