「雅各家啊，以色列家所有的餘剩之民哪，你們這些自出母腹就被我負抱、自出母胎就被我背負的人，要聽我的話！直到你們年老，我還是一樣；直到你們髮白，我仍然扶持你們；我既造了你們，就必背負、扶持、拯救你們。

他在他們的一切患難中也受患難，並且他面前的使者拯救了他們。他以自己的愛和憐恤救贖了他們，在古時所有的日子裡舉起他們、背負他們。

在曠野，神容忍了他們約有四十年之久。

他必像牧人牧養自己的羊群，把羊羔聚集在他的膀臂下，把牠們抱在自己的懷中，又溫柔地引領哺乳的母羊。

他鋪開雲彩作遮蓋，用火來照亮黑夜。他們祈求，他就使鵪鶉飛來，並用天上的糧食使他們飽足。他打開磐石，水就湧出，在那乾旱之地流淌如河；

他白天用雲彩、整夜用火光引導他們。他在曠野使磐石裂開，給他們喝多如深淵的水。他讓水從巖石流出，如江河流下。可是他們又繼續對他犯罪，在那乾旱之地悖逆至高者。他們心中試探神，隨著自己的慾望索要食物。他們說反對神的話：「難道神能夠在曠野中擺設筵席嗎？看哪，雖然他曾擊打磐石、使水湧出、溪流漫溢，難道他還能夠賜下糧食嗎？還能為自己的子民預備肉嗎？」耶和華聽了就動怒，烈火向雅各燃起，怒氣也向以色列上騰；因為他們不相信神，也不依靠他的救恩。但他還是吩咐天上的雲朵，打開了天上的門；他降下嗎哪給他們吃，把天上的糧食賜給他們；人吃到了天使的糧食；他送食物給他們，使他們滿足。他使東風從天上颳起，以他的力量引領南風；他降下肉給他們，多如塵土；他降下飛鳥，多如海邊的沙粒；他使飛鳥落在他們營中，在他們住所的四圍；
