擊鼓之樂止息，歡躍之喧鬧停止，彈琴之樂止息。他們不得再又唱歌又喝酒了；喝濃酒的必覺得苦了。

約拿便起來，照永恆主的話往尼尼微去。這尼尼微是個極大的城，要走三天、才走得完。約拿便進城；走着一天的行程，直宣告說：『再過四十天，尼尼微就覆滅了。』尼尼微人信了上帝，便宣告禁食，從最大的到至小的都穿着麻衣。這消息傳到尼尼微王那裏，他就從寶座上起來，脫下朝服，披上麻布，坐在爐灰中。又出通告傳遍尼尼微說：『王和大臣有諭旨說：人和牲口、牛羣羊羣、甚麼都不可嘗，草不可喫，水也不可喝。人和牲口都要披上麻布；要極力呼求上帝；各人要回轉過來、離開他的壞行徑，丟棄手中的強暴；或者上帝改變初衷，回心轉意、不發烈怒，使我們不至於滅亡，也未可知。』

掃羅的孫子米非波設也下去迎接王；他自從王出走的日子、到王平平安安回來的日子，都沒有修腳，沒有修鬍鬚，也沒有洗衣服。

他們隨着手鼓和琴而高唱，又因簫笛的聲音而歡喜。

亞哈聽見了這些話，就撕裂衣服，身穿麻布，禁食，睡在麻布上，垂頭喪氣地走來走去。

有禍啊那些躺在象牙床上，在床榻上伸着懶腰，喫羣中現挑的羊羔，和棚間之肥牛犢的！那些應琵琶聲嘁嘁喳喳胡唱，還自己編製各種詩歌要媲美大衛的！那些以大碗喝酒，用上好的油抹身，卻不為約瑟的破敗而憂傷成病的！
