Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote.

While the word[ was] in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven,[ saying], O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.

That the triumphing of the wicked[ is] short, and the joy of the hypocrite[ but] for a moment?

They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat[ was] yet in their mouths,The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen[ men] of Israel.

Then came in all the king’s wise[ men]: but they could not read the writing, nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof.

Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.And this[ is] the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.This[ is] the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it.TEKEL; Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.PERES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is[ the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

And now the wise[ men], the astrologers, have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make known unto me the interpretation thereof: but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing:

He, that being often reproved hardeneth[ his] neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles’[ feathers], and his nails like birds’[ claws].

For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink,[ and] be merry.But God said unto him,[ Thou] fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
