When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact.

Arioch was the commander of the king’s guard. He went out to put the wise men of Babylon to death. So Daniel spoke to him wisely and carefully.

Then Daniel replied with prudence and discretion to Arioch, the captain of the king’s guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon.

When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, came to kill them, Daniel handled the situation with wisdom and discretion.

Then Daniel responded with tact and discretion to Arioch, the captain of the king’s guard, who had gone out to execute the wise men of Babylon.

五月十日、就是巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒王十九年、侍立在巴比倫王面前的護衛長尼布撒拉旦來到耶路撒冷。

以下這一項在日光之下我也看見，是智慧的例子；在我看來大有意義。有一個小城，裏邊的人稀少；有一個大王來攻擊它，圍繞它，修築大高壘來攻打它。但城中有一個人很貧窮，卻有智慧；他用他的智慧搭救了那城；卻沒有人懷念着那人，那貧窮漢。我說，雖即那貧窮漢的智慧儘管被藐視，而他的話儘管無人聽從，然智慧終是勝過勇力的。智慧人的話安安靜靜地有人聽，勝過掌管者在愚頑人之中的喊叫聲。智慧比打仗的器械好，但一個作錯了事的人能把許多好事弄壞。

城裏剩下的餘民、和那些投降了巴比倫王的人、以及其餘的人民、護衛長尼布撒拉旦都使他們流亡到巴比倫去。

耶路撒冷四圍所有的城牆、那跟從護衛長的迦勒底人軍隊都給拆毁了。

於是但以理便進去見王所派要除滅巴比倫博士的亞略，這樣對他說：『不要除滅巴比倫的博士；請領我進到王面前，我便將夢的解析向王講明白。』

有一個聰明的婦人從城上呼叫說：『聽啊，聽啊！請告訴約押說：「請走近前來，我好和你說話。」』約押走近前去；婦人問他說：『你是約押不是？』他說：『是的。』婦人對他說：『請聽使女的話。』約押說：『我正在聽呢。』婦人說道：『古時常有話說：「只要在亞比拉求問，事就解決。」我們是以色列中和平忠厚的人；你竟想法子要毁壞一座城、又是以色列中的一座府城！你為甚麼要吞沒永恆主的產業呢？』約押回答說：『我絕對不吞沒不毁壞。事情決不至於如此；只因以法蓮山地有一個人、比基利的兒子名叫示巴，他舉手攻擊大衛王；你們只要將他一人交出來，我便離城而去。』婦人對約押說：『看吧，那人的頭，一定從城牆上丟給你。』婦人就憑她的聰明去見眾民。他們便割下比基利的兒子示巴的頭，丟給約押，約押吹號角，眾人就離城散開，各回各家去了。約押也回耶路撒冷到王那裏。
