When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact.

Arioch was the commander of the king’s guard. He went out to put the wise men of Babylon to death. So Daniel spoke to him wisely and carefully.

Then Daniel replied with prudence and discretion to Arioch, the captain of the king’s guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon.

五月十日，就是巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒第十九年，侍立在巴比倫王面前的護衛長尼布撒拉旦來到耶路撒冷。

在日光之下，我又看見一樣智慧，覺得很有意義：有一座小城，人數不多；有一個大君王來進攻，把它包圍，建造巨大的高壘攻城。城裡有一個貧窮但有智慧的人，用他的智慧救了那城。然而，卻沒有人記念那窮人。於是我說：“智慧勝過武力”，但是那個窮人的智慧被藐視，他的話也沒有人聽從。聽智慧人安安靜靜說出來的話，勝過聽管理愚昧者的人的喊叫。智慧勝於戰鬥的武器，但一個罪人能破壞許多好事。

城裡剩下的人民，和那些已經向巴比倫王投降的人，以及其餘的人民，都被護衛長尼布撒拉旦擄到巴比倫去。

跟隨護衛長的迦勒底人全軍拆毀了耶路撒冷周圍所有的城牆。

於是但以理進去見亞略，就是王委派去殺絕巴比倫的智慧人的，對他這樣說：“不要殺絕巴比倫的智慧人；請把我帶到王面前，我要把夢的意思向王解釋。”

有一個聰明的婦人在城牆上呼叫：“請聽！請聽！請你們對約押說：‘請你走近這裡，我有話對你說。’”約押走近婦人那裡，婦人問：“你是約押嗎？”他回答：“我是。”婦人對他說：“請聽婢女的話！”他說：“我正在聽！”婦人說：“古時人常說：‘只要在亞比拉求問，事就必成全。’我在以色列中是和平信實的人，你卻設法毀滅這座以色列的母城。你為甚麼要吞滅耶和華的產業呢？”約押回答：“絕對不會！我絕對不會吞滅，也不會毀壞。事情不是這樣的；只因以法蓮山地有一個人名叫示巴，是比基利的兒子，他舉手攻擊大衛王。你們只要把他一人交出來，我就離開這城。”婦人對約押說：“看哪！那人的頭必從這城牆上丟給你。”婦人就憑她的智慧去見眾人，他們就把比基利的兒子示巴的頭砍下來，丟給約押；約押吹號角，眾人就離城散開，各回自己的家去了。約押也回耶路撒冷去見王。
