It is the Lord who created the stars, the Pleiades and Orion. He turns darkness into morning and day into night. He draws up water from the oceans and pours it down as rain on the land. The Lord is his name!

He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns midnight into dawn and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land— the Lord is his name.

For the Lord is the one who shaped the mountains, stirs up the winds, and reveals his thoughts to mankind. He turns the light of dawn into darkness and treads on the heights of the earth. The Lord God of Heaven’s Armies is his name!

He made all the stars— the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the southern sky.

“ In that day,” says the Sovereign Lord,“ I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth while it is still day.

The Lord’s home reaches up to the heavens, while its foundation is on the earth. He draws up water from the oceans and pours it down as rain on the land. The Lord is his name!

You send the darkness, and it becomes night, when all the forest animals prowl about.

“ He uncovers mysteries hidden in darkness; he brings light to the deepest gloom.

“ Can you direct the movement of the stars— binding the cluster of the Pleiades or loosening the cords of Orion?Can you direct the constellations through the seasons or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens?

Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery.They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High.That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them.“ Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains.

He makes these things happen either to punish people or to show his unfailing love.

The Lord blanketed Egypt in darkness, for they had defied his commands to let his people go.

When Noah was 600 years old, on the seventeenth day of the second month, all the underground waters erupted from the earth, and the rain fell in mighty torrents from the sky.The rain continued to fall for forty days and forty nights.That very day Noah had gone into the boat with his wife and his sons— Shem, Ham, and Japheth— and their wives.With them in the boat were pairs of every kind of animal— domestic and wild, large and small— along with birds of every kind.Two by two they came into the boat, representing every living thing that breathes.A male and female of each kind entered, just as God had commanded Noah. to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.”

Finally the seventh time, his servant told him,“ I saw a little cloud about the size of a man’s hand rising from the sea.” Then Elijah shouted,“ Hurry to Ahab and tell him,‘ Climb into your chariot and go back home. If you don’t hurry, the rain will stop you!’”And soon the sky was black with clouds. A heavy wind brought a terrific rainstorm, and Ahab left quickly for Jezreel.

“ Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east?Have you made daylight spread to the ends of the earth, to bring an end to the night’s wickedness?

But just before dawn the Lord looked down on the Egyptian army from the pillar of fire and cloud, and he threw their forces into total confusion.He twisted their chariot wheels, making their chariots difficult to drive.“ Let’s get out of here— away from these Israelites!” the Egyptians shouted.“ The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt!”When all the Israelites had reached the other side, the Lord said to Moses,“ Raise your hand over the sea again. Then the waters will rush back and cover the Egyptians and their chariots and charioteers.”So as the sun began to rise, Moses raised his hand over the sea, and the water rushed back into its usual place. The Egyptians tried to escape, but the Lord swept them into the sea.Then the waters returned and covered all the chariots and charioteers— the entire army of Pharaoh. Of all the Egyptians who had chased the Israelites into the sea, not a single one survived.

I will lead blind Israel down a new path, guiding them along an unfamiliar way. I will brighten the darkness before them and smooth out the road ahead of them. Yes, I will indeed do these things; I will not forsake them.

“ Can you shout to the clouds and make it rain?

Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Lift your hand toward heaven, and the land of Egypt will be covered with a darkness so thick you can feel it.”So Moses lifted his hand to the sky, and a deep darkness covered the entire land of Egypt for three days.During all that time the people could not see each other, and no one moved. But there was light as usual where the people of Israel lived.

You clothed the earth with floods of water, water that covered even the mountains.At your command, the water fled; at the sound of your thunder, it hurried away.Mountains rose and valleys sank to the levels you decreed.Then you set a firm boundary for the seas, so they would never again cover the earth.

the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.”

We grope like the blind along a wall, feeling our way like people without eyes. Even at brightest noontime, we stumble as though it were dark. Among the living, we are like the dead.
