For Israel’s sake I destroyed the Amorites. They were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks, but I destroyed the fruit on their branches and their roots in the ground.

昔有亞摩利人、高若柏香木、強如橡樹、我翦滅之於以色列人前、上剝其果、下毀其根、

“ Yet I destroyed the Amorites before them, though they were tall as the cedars and strong as the oaks. I destroyed their fruit above and their roots below.

“ Yet I destroyed the Amorites to make room in the land for my people. The Amorites were as tall as cedar trees. They were as strong as oak trees. But I cut off their fruit above the ground and their roots below it.

“ Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars and who was as strong as the oaks; I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.

“ But as my people watched, I destroyed the Amorites, though they were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks. I destroyed the fruit on their branches and dug out their roots.

Yet I destroyed the Amorite as Israel advanced; his height was like the cedars, and he was as sturdy as the oaks; I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.

“ Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, Though his height was like the height of cedars And he was as strong as the oaks; I also destroyed his fruit above and his roots below.

“ Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, Whose height was like the height of the cedars, And he was as strong as the oaks; Yet I destroyed his fruit above And his roots beneath.

Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.

Yet I destroyed the Amorite as Israel advanced; his height was like the cedars, and he was as sturdy as the oaks; I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.

Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height[ was] like the height of the cedars, and he[ was] strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.

Below his roots dry up, and his branches wither above.

( 3: 19)“ For indeed the day is coming, burning like a furnace, and all the arrogant evildoers will be chaff. The coming day will burn them up,” says the LORD who rules over all.“ It will not leave even a root or branch.

In the fourth generation your descendants will return here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its limit.”

But Sihon did not permit Israel to pass through his border; he gathered all his forces together and went out against Israel into the wilderness. When he came to Jahaz, he fought against Israel.But the Israelites defeated him in battle and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the Ammonites, for the border of the Ammonites was strongly defended.So Israel took all these cities; and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all its villages.

“ Obey what I am commanding you this day. I am going to drive out before you the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

Then they presented the Israelites with a discouraging report of the land they had investigated, saying,“ The land that we passed through to investigate is a land that devours its inhabitants. All the people we saw there are of great stature.We even saw the Nephilim there( the descendants of Anak came from the Nephilim), and we seemed liked grasshoppers both to ourselves and to them.”

Get up, make your way across Wadi Arnon. Look! I have already delivered over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Go ahead! Take it! Engage him in war!This very day I will begin to fill all the people of the earth with dread and to terrify them when they hear about you. They will shiver and shake in anticipation of your approach.”Then I sent messengers from the Kedemoth Desert to King Sihon of Heshbon with an offer of peace:“ Let me pass through your land; I will keep strictly to the roadway. I will not turn aside to the right or the left.Sell me food for cash so that I can eat and sell me water to drink. Just allow me to go through on foot,just as the descendants of Esau who live at Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land the LORD our God is giving us.”But King Sihon of Heshbon was unwilling to allow us to pass near him because the LORD our God had made him obstinate and stubborn so that he might deliver him over to you this very day.The LORD said to me,“ Look! I have already begun to give over Sihon and his land to you. Start right now to take his land as your possession.”When Sihon and all his troops emerged to encounter us in battle at Jahaz,the LORD our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, along with his sons and everyone else.

Only King Og of Bashan was left of the remaining Rephaites.( It is noteworthy that his sarcophagus was made of iron. Does it not, indeed, still remain in Rabbath of the Ammonites? It is thirteen and a half feet long and six feet wide according to standard measure.)

Listen, Israel: Today you are about to cross the Jordan so you can dispossess the nations there, people greater and stronger than you who live in large cities with extremely high fortifications.They include the Anakites, a numerous and tall people whom you know about and of whom it is said,“ Who is able to resist the Anakites?”Understand today that the LORD your God who goes before you is a devouring fire; he will defeat and subdue them before you. You will dispossess and destroy them quickly just as he has told you.

But the inhabitants are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there.The Amalekites live in the land of the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan.”

He defeated many nations, and killed mighty kings–Sihon, king of the Amorites, and Og, king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan.He gave their land as an inheritance, as an inheritance to Israel his people.

I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a land that is both good and spacious, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the region of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

The LORD God of Israel handed Sihon and his whole army over to Israel and they defeated them. Israel took all the land of the Amorites who lived in that land.They took all the Amorite territory from the Arnon River on the south to the Jabbok River on the north, from the desert in the east to the Jordan in the west.Since the LORD God of Israel has driven out the Amorites before his people Israel, do you think you can just take it from them?

to the one who struck down great kings, for his loyal love endures,and killed powerful kings, for his loyal love endures,Sihon, king of the Amorites, for his loyal love endures,Og, king of Bashan, for his loyal love endures,and gave their land as an inheritance, for his loyal love endures,as an inheritance to Israel his servant, for his loyal love endures,

So the three elite warriors broke through the Philistine forces and drew some water from the cistern in Bethlehem near the gate. They carried it back to David, but he refused to drink it. He poured it out as a drink offering to the LORDand said,“ O LORD, I will not do this! It is equivalent to the blood of the men who risked their lives by going.” So he refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three elite warriors.Abishai son of Zeruiah, the brother of Joab, was head of the three. He killed three hundred men with his spear and gained fame among the three.From the three he was given honor and he became their officer, even though he was not one of the three.Benaiah son of Jehoida was a brave warrior from Kabzeel who performed great exploits. He struck down the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in a cistern on a snowy day.He also killed an impressive-looking Egyptian. The Egyptian wielded a spear, while Benaiah attacked him with a club. He grabbed the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoida, who gained fame among the three elite warriors.

Joshua continued,“ This is how you will know the living God is among you and that he will truly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites.

Then I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought with you, but I handed them over to you; you conquered their land and I destroyed them from before you.Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, launched an attack against Israel. He summoned Balaam son of Beor to call down judgment on you.I refused to respond to Balaam; he kept prophesying good things about you, and I rescued you from his power.You crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The leaders of Jericho, as well as the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites, fought with you, but I handed them over to you.I sent terror ahead of you to drive out before you the two Amorite kings. I gave you the victory; it was not by your swords or bows.

What is going to happen to us? Our brothers have drained away our courage by describing people who are more numerous and taller than we are, and great cities whose defenses appear to be as high as heaven itself! Moreover, they said they saw Anakites there.”

( The Emites used to live there, a people as powerful, numerous, and tall as the Anakites.These people, as well as the Anakites, are also considered Rephaites; the Moabites call them Emites.

“ You gave them kingdoms and peoples, and you allocated them to every corner of the land. They inherited the land of King Sihon of Heshbon and the land of King Og of Bashan.You multiplied their descendants like the stars of the sky. You brought them to the land you had told their ancestors to enter in order to possess.Their descendants entered and possessed the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites who were the inhabitants of the land. You delivered them into their hand, together with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with as they pleased.

“‘ Say to them: This is what the sovereign LORD says:“‘ Will it prosper? Will he not rip out its roots and cause its fruit to rot and wither? All its foliage will wither. No strong arm or large army will be needed to pull it out by its roots.

The day the LORD delivered the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua prayed to the LORD before Israel:“ O sun, stand still over Gibeon! O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon!”

At that time Joshua attacked and eliminated the Anakites from the hill country– from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and all the hill country of Judah and Israel. Joshua annihilated them and their cities.No Anakites were left in Israelite territory, though some remained in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod.

Therefore, as flaming fire devours straw, and dry grass disintegrates in the flames, so their root will rot, and their flower will blow away like dust. For they have rejected the law of the LORD who commands armies, they have spurned the commands of the Holy One of Israel.
