And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

Then he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. And Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him eight days after his birth. Later Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

Then God made a covenant with Abraham. God told him that circumcision would show who the members of the covenant were. Abraham became Isaac’s father. He circumcised Isaac eight days after he was born. Later, Isaac became Jacob’s father. Jacob had 12 sons. They became the founders of the 12 tribes of Israel.

“ God also gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision at that time. So when Abraham became the father of Isaac, he circumcised him on the eighth day. And the practice was continued when Isaac became the father of Jacob, and when Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs of the Israelite nation.

And so he gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. After this, he fathered Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

And He gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham fathered Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac fathered Jacob, and Jacob, the twelve patriarchs.

Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac and circumcised him when he was eight days old, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

And God said to Abraham,“ As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations.This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised.You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised. Every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house or bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring,both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money, shall surely be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant.Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant.”

The sons of Leah: Reuben( Jacob’s firstborn), Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.The sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s servant: Dan and Naphtali.The sons of Zilpah, Leah’s servant: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.

Then they journeyed from Bethel. When they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labor, and she had hard labor.

“ Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

For this is what the promise said:“ About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.”And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac,though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad— in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls—she was told,“ The older will serve the younger.”As it is written,“ Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

When the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben, for she said,“ Because the Lord has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.”She conceived again and bore a son, and said,“ Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given me this son also.” And she called his name Simeon.Again she conceived and bore a son, and said,“ Now this time my husband will be attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi.And she conceived again and bore a son, and said,“ This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she called his name Judah. Then she ceased bearing.When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister. She said to Jacob,“ Give me children, or I shall die!”Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said,“ Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?”Then she said,“ Here is my servant Bilhah; go in to her, so that she may give birth on my behalf, that even I may have children through her.”So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife, and Jacob went in to her.And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.Then Rachel said,“ God has judged me, and has also heard my voice and given me a son.” Therefore she called his name Dan.Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.Then Rachel said,“ With mighty wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister and have prevailed.” So she called his name Naphtali.When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.Then Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.And Leah said,“ Good fortune has come!” so she called his name Gad.Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.And Leah said,“ Happy am I! For women have called me happy.” So she called his name Asher.In the days of wheat harvest Reuben went and found mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah,“ Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”But she said to her,“ Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes also?” Rachel said,“ Then he may lie with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”When Jacob came from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said,“ You must come in to me, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he lay with her that night.And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son.Leah said,“ God has given me my wages because I gave my servant to my husband.” So she called his name Issachar.And Leah conceived again, and she bore Jacob a sixth son.Then Leah said,“ God has endowed me with a good endowment; now my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” So she called his name Zebulun.Afterward she bore a daughter and called her name Dinah.Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb.She conceived and bore a son and said,“ God has taken away my reproach.”And she called his name Joseph, saying,“ May the Lord add to me another son!”

The Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had promised.And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him.Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac.And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

Abraham fathered Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel.

And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.The children struggled together within her, and she said,“ If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.And the Lord said to her,“ Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.”When her days to give birth were completed, behold, there were twins in her womb.The first came out red, all his body like a hairy cloak, so they called his name Esau.Afterward his brother came out with his hand holding Esau’s heel, so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised.

To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified.

Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,

See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils!

And as her soul was departing( for she was dying), she called his name Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.

Moses gave you circumcision( not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household:Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

These are the sons of Israel: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun,Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God, so as to make the promise void.
