He was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors; and he received living words to pass on to us.

Moses was with the Israelites in the desert. He was with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai. Moses was with our people of long ago. He received living words to pass on to us.

Moses was with our ancestors, the assembly of God’s people in the wilderness, when the angel spoke to him at Mount Sinai. And there Moses received life giving words to pass on to us.

He is the one who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors. He received living oracles to give to us.

This is the one who was in the assembly in the wilderness together with the angel who spoke to him at length on Mount Sinai, and who was with our fathers; and he received living words to pass on to you.

Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.

you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.”

whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies— in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

he said to them,“ Take to heart all the words by which I am warning you today, that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law.For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”

while Moses went up to God. The Lord called to him out of the mountain, saying,“ Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob, and tell the people of Israel:‘ You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine;and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”So Moses came and called the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the Lord had commanded him.All the people answered together and said,“ All that the Lord has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to the Lord.And the Lord said to Moses,“ Behold, I am coming to you in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever.” When Moses told the words of the people to the Lord,the Lord said to Moses,“ Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their garmentsand be ready for the third day. For on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people.And you shall set limits for the people all around, saying,‘ Take care not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death.No hand shall touch him, but he shall be stoned or shot; whether beast or man, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.”So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people; and they washed their garments.And he said to the people,“ Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.”On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled.Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain.

when Moses commanded us a law, as a possession for the assembly of Jacob.

“ Now this is the commandment— the statutes and the rules— that the Lord your God commanded me to teach you, that you may do them in the land to which you are going over, to possess it,that you may fear the Lord your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.Hear therefore, O Israel, and be careful to do them, that it may go well with you, and that you may multiply greatly, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

Go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say, and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it.’“ And the Lord heard your words, when you spoke to me. And the Lord said to me,‘ I have heard the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken.Oh that they had such a heart as this always, to fear me and to keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever!Go and say to them,“ Return to your tents.”But you, stand here by me, and I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules that you shall teach them, that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.’

In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

“ Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.

“ Now these are the rules that you shall set before them.When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing.If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him.If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out alone.But if the slave plainly says,‘ I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.“ When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do.If she does not please her master, who has designated her for himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has broken faith with her.If he designates her for his son, he shall deal with her as with a daughter.If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, or her marital rights.And if he does not do these three things for her, she shall go out for nothing, without payment of money.

He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children,that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children,so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God.The Ephraimites, armed with the bow, turned back on the day of battle.

Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary.

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

You came down on Mount Sinai and spoke with them from heaven and gave them right rules and true laws, good statutes and commandments,and you made known to them your holy Sabbath and commanded them commandments and statutes and a law by Moses your servant.

“ This Moses, whom they rejected, saying,‘ Who made you a ruler and a judge?’— this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.”

But on the next day all the congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and against Aaron, saying,“ You have killed the people of the Lord.”And when the congregation had assembled against Moses and against Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting. And behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the Lord appeared.

But the righteousness based on faith says,“ Do not say in your heart,‘ Who will ascend into heaven?’”( that is, to bring Christ down)“ or‘ Who will descend into the abyss?’”( that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).But what does it say?“ The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”( that is, the word of faith that we proclaim);because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

and said to Moses,“ You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”Moses said to the people,“ Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of him may be before you, that you may not sin.”

They assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron and said to them,“ You have gone too far! For all in the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the Lord?”When Moses heard it, he fell on his face,and he said to Korah and all his company,“ In the morning the Lord will show who is his, and who is holy, and will bring him near to him. The one whom he chooses he will bring near to him.Do this: take censers, Korah and all his company;put fire in them and put incense on them before the Lord tomorrow, and the man whom the Lord chooses shall be the holy one. You have gone too far, sons of Levi!”And Moses said to Korah,“ Hear now, you sons of Levi:is it too small a thing for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do service in the tabernacle of the Lord and to stand before the congregation to minister to them,and that he has brought you near him, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? And would you seek the priesthood also?Therefore it is against the Lord that you and all your company have gathered together. What is Aaron that you grumble against him?”And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and they said,“ We will not come up.Is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you must also make yourself a prince over us?Moreover, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.”And Moses was very angry and said to the Lord,“ Do not respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, and I have not harmed one of them.”And Moses said to Korah,“ Be present, you and all your company, before the Lord, you and they, and Aaron, tomorrow.And let every one of you take his censer and put incense on it, and every one of you bring before the Lord his censer, 250 censers; you also, and Aaron, each his censer.”So every man took his censer and put fire in them and laid incense on them and stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting with Moses and Aaron.Then Korah assembled all the congregation against them at the entrance of the tent of meeting. And the glory of the Lord appeared to all the congregation.And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,“ Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.”And they fell on their faces and said,“ O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?”And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,“ Say to the congregation, Get away from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”Then Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.And he spoke to the congregation, saying,“ Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be swept away with all their sins.”So they got away from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. And Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the door of their tents, together with their wives, their sons, and their little ones.And Moses said,“ Hereby you shall know that the Lord has sent me to do all these works, and that it has not been of my own accord.If these men die as all men die, or if they are visited by the fate of all mankind, then the Lord has not sent me.But if the Lord creates something new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have despised the Lord.”And as soon as he had finished speaking all these words, the ground under them split apart.And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the people who belonged to Korah and all their goods.So they and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol, and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.And all Israel who were around them fled at their cry, for they said,“ Lest the earth swallow us up!”And fire came out from the Lord and consumed the 250 men offering the incense.

They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises.

For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution,

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
